I am the proud mother of two very smart and compassionate boys. My oldest is finishing his last year in elementary school. So I am in the middle of researching and visiting middle schools that will best suit his academic needs and growth. My requirements for a good school is diversity, accelerated curriculum as well as an active parent/teacher environment. Any help or advice from other middle school parents is welcomed. My youngest is in Kindergarten and that has been quite a challenge. My oldest is very independent/self reliant and my youngest is an emotional wreck every other day. My parenting style is somewhat non traditional. I don't have my kids on a tight schedule. We don't shelter them from the realities of the real world. Instead, we choose to expose them to as much as possible, even when it's harsh. Then we allow for discussions. My husband and I share our duties as parents equally. In order for our kids to have both parents most of the time: I work a day job, so I drop them off at school in the mornings. My husband works grave yard, so he picks them up everyday after school and helps them with their homework. Then he drops them off at my mom's around 4pm and I pick them up around 6:30pm. We are very fortunate to not have to hire a sitter.
Parents I'd Like to Meet
I work full time as a Production Coordinator for a fashion college in downtown Los Angeles. I also run my own event planning and promotion business on the side. Needless to say, I am very busy. But I am also a very involved parent. I volunteer at my boys school whenever I get a chance. I help with fundraisers and collecting items to donate to the school. My husband and I have never missed 'back to school nights' or parent conferences. We try our best to volunteer on field trips. It's very important to us and our children that we take interest in their education. I spend time teaching my children things that I don't think the school focuses on. One example is the 50 states and capitals which both my 5 year old and 10 year old has memorized. Now we're on to countries and its capitals.
I am interested in meeting other parents who are just as passionate about their children's education. I hope to learn from other parent's experience.
