In My Own Words

I am a single Mother of two beautiful boys Jerry 19, Adrian 27. Adrian is a 27 year old Down syndrome child and Jerry is the reason why I have become so passionate about education. Jerry was tested gifted in elementary, and when he got to middle school managed to go astray and got he in trouble with the law. He was not going to graduate from middle school, because he had fails across the board. I asked the Principal of this middle school to please hold him back and she told me that she could not do this any more and for me to look for a continuation type high school to help me with my son. I was desperate and that’s when I looked for an alternative, we went charter. Jerry started the Oscar de La Hoya Animo Charter High School, in 2003 and his sophomore year there he was being honored, by becoming a member of the 3.0 club, after only two years he had made a full 180 turn around. Two years after that he graduated and went off to Cal State LA. I have since dedicated my life to changing education as we now know it. All our children deserve the best education they can get. They should also be able to get this education at their local schools, parents need to know that they have the power to collectively go out and change their local school, if we stick together we have great power.
