I have 2 daughters ages 6 and 4. They both started reading at age 3, recognizing 3 letter words at age 2 1/2. My main challenge is .... "CHALLENGE." Yes that's right. I keep trying to keep the girls challenged and even though they both go to school full time, they still come home to some home school activity I organize for them. I thus try to keep them challenged as my greatest fear is for them being bored at school. Most people have the general saying, "every parent thinks their child’s a genius." I can't tell you how many times I have heard that. But the thing is our educational system is gradually, yet steadily not recognizing kids with talented potentials and most of the time, some kids out of boredom probably begin to misbehave in class environments just to ward off the boredom. If any parent has the same problems I would be interested in knowing how you tackle this. For my 6 year old, she goes to a private school and even though she was affected by the cut-off age for my area, the school still tried to accommodate her by allowing her to attend some Grade 1 classes whilst registered as K. The only issue I had was I tried to get the school to register her for the standardized Terra Nova Test for Grade 1 for which I was turned down, more out of bureaucracy than the ability of my daughter performing well in the test. This has really worried me and I don't know what to do at this point. I would really love to read from any parent with advice regarding how I should follow-up this issue. Thanks for reading, and I hope I would find some form of solace through this forum.
