In My Own Words

LEARNING DISABILITIES: If you see that your child has difficulties with exceeding according to there age get help for them in an early intervention program immediately. That is the only way you are truly going to get the right services that you need for your child in the public school systems, from pre-school to graduation. Early intervention starts from birth to 3 years to the day, after that public schools take over. You will have a really hard time getting your child services that they need. That is what I have experienced. Programs such as: speech, occupational therapy, physical therapy, reading, comprehension, focusing in classroom, help with learning disabilities, ADD or ADHD, and most of all a paraprofessional which according to your circumstances is a 1 to 1, 1 to 2, 1 to 3 ratio, which means, paraprofessional works with the one child alone with the teacher or a one to 2 where the paraprofessional works with 1 other children along with your child. And so forth. They work in conjunction with the teacher. which is a specialist that is working with your child along with the teacher. Most insurance will cover early intervention or state help with the cost along with a sliding scale according to your income. It is usually very inexpensive. There is so much help out there that a lot of parents are not informed of when it comes to help for your child or children. Usually you will have to talk to your pediatricians and let them know the difficulty that your child is having and you would like to have some help with that and they will work with you. If they don't, find a new pediatrician. You have to get help before your child is three. That is imperative. find a good Nero-physiologist to test your child. ask around and find out who is great in your area, they will let you know what your child really needs to excel in school. Another alternative is check your local State colleges and find out if they have any special programs where they study your child to see if there are any challenges they may have. There is always a professional there to guide the students. And they usually are advanced students in there studies. They also check for autism and global delays. They are very thorough in what they do. They will continue to check on your Childs progress. If you are having problems with the school in for what you are getting for services get a Advocate for your child. For one thing the schools hate them because they will have to get you what they ask for and schools are always complaining about budget cuts. If you do not want your child to be part of that budget cut you have to be your own childs advocate or hire one. The US says there is now NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND. But there are still children out there who do not know how to read when they graduate from high school and fall between the cracks. If you want your child to exceed in school and for life’s challenges out of school help them now. I hope that this will help someone.
