In My Own Words

I have worked with and care deeply for children with special needs. I desire that parents be informed prior to school about the resources available and options they can choose. I would like to enable parent groups that can work together to bring benefits for our children at school. Also I would like to see teachers and staff educated about the various needs of kids, the different things each one struggles with, and teach them to see our children with a compassionate outlook desiring to find ways to enable the special needs children to have the same opportunity at success as a regular child. I am also very concerned with cliques and girl bullying, with the alcohol and drug use prevalent at the High school level and even some at Middle school. I do not like at all the pressure upon the girls as to how to dress, act and the absolute need to date or hook up, have sex and be consumed with getting the popular boys to date you. These things interfere with school and education and can destroy our children. Parents must become aware of the current issues, society and the media's influence upon them and normalization of sexaul behaviors, provacative dressing & drinking, along with smoking pot. Too many parents do not take the time to notice and lay down a law in their household that reflects our country's law as to drinking and marijuana. And no one seems to care much that our feminist movement has led our daughter's to dress like prostitues and to think a one night hook up is their ultimate goal in high school. If we can get away from the above, I wish to focus on high academic standars that give challenges appropriate to each age, an increase in hands on teaching - not memorizing a school book, more application of the subjects - that tie each subject to real life applications and link the subjects to each other. Also, the use of technology in the classroom and for homework is a definate must to me as the children need to learn how to create documents, papers, present scientific findings, and use the tools they will be called to use in the work place. I also believe we need to pour into our teachers everything we can to help them keep their initial love of teaching and desire to teach. We need to allow them the freedom to utilize their teaching gifts to make effective changes in their subject and class that will let their love and enthusiasm blossom and continue year after year and then let that overflow to the children. To provide the teachers the appropriate compensation, supplies, staff, etc to let them enjoy teaching, continue to learn and be challenged to new levels themselves, attending workshops, seminars and furthering eduction. If necessary, set up a group that works to teach and help parents with discipline and development, proper social values, activities, teach them how to monitor their child's computer exposure, how to provide good home environments with effective boundaries and rules, with the consequences outlined. Perhaps if we could teach parents how to be better parents, having a group to support each other, challenge each other to help their children become well behaved, productive and conrtibutin citizens. For example help them help their children pursue their compassion for the needy, the environment, what ever they feel for, helping them and leading them to care about the world around them will keep them from becoming difficult at school. I realize it's not as easy as I am saying, but I think equipping parents to better meet their children's needs for boundaries, love and discipline should free up teachers from being disciplinarians and parents and let them pursue what they love and are best at teaching! This will bless our children.
