I would like to meet parents of high school students with learning disabilities who are thinking about the post-secondary transition process now.
I am the mom of an adult son with LD, and I was a college Learning Specialist for 13 years -- until I resigned in frustration last year. I saw too many students falling through the cracks and was helpless to make a difference - I was the only Learning Specialist, and part-time, in a community college of over 17,000 students. I made every effort to affect change, but my boss was intent on keeping the status quo -- and that's when I gave up.
I KNOW that many students with LD are capable of succeeding in college, if they put certain provisions into effect. They must navigate carefully and deliberately - there are a lot of mine fields for regular freshmen, and more for students with LD.
I teach a class for high school students and their parents called "Conquer College with LD" in which I provide proactive strategies for college success.
Parents I'd Like to Meet
parents of Special Ed HS students who have aspirations for college, parents of LD college students who are presently struggling
