I am a stay-at-home mother of three and a husband (I almost consider him a child). My children are 8, 5, and almost 3. My Husband, well, I guess it depends on the day. Anyway. My 8 year old is a second grader in a 2nd/3rd split class. She is in the Accelerated Reader program and the Gifted/Talented program. My middle is a special needs child. Although he doesn't really have a diagnosis, he has a list. The biggest challenge is the speech (global) apraxia. He only has three words that he can say. He attends a different school in our district because it is the only school that has a self-contained special education classroom. Then there is the three year old. I think he's lost his mind! No seriously, I think the child is brillant! He can and wants to learn anything if you are willing to show him. He keeps me busy while the other two are at school all day.
I am a Parent Representative for the School Based Council for my daughter's school and I also am a member of the PTO. I also volunteer for my son's school as well. I am currently a member of my cities Park and Recreation Board and am a candidate for City Council! I will let you know how that turns out! With all that and the two to three days a week that my son has therapy appoinments, I am one busy momma. Needless to say, I have no idea if a could even hold down a job. My kids and my neices and nephew are what I do first and everthing else second! But, somehow it all works.
Parents I'd Like to Meet
I would love to meet the people who thought of the standards by which teachers are having to live by, or what I affectionately call the "Educational Black Hole". I would also like to talk the Bill and Melinda Gates. I think that they could give me some great ideas on how to get the educators in my state to get off their butts and pay attention to the mess they are making! It might also be nice to meet another parent who could stand up and fight with me.
