Our goal as parents has always been to try and encourage independence, and love of learning. One of my favorite, bittersweet memories was kindergarten - when dropping off our daughter instead of the tearful separation I was expecting, she was so excited that she ran off with barely a look back!
Now, many years later, daughter Alexandra is in 8th grade, and her current middle school does not have a high school. She is considering local private high schools, but has recently been shown boarding schools as an option during a "high school night". We are torn between wanting her to stay at home, and recognizing that many of the top-tier boarding schools have outstanding teachers, facilities, and strong learning and leadership opportunities.
We have only agreed at this point to visit seven schools - including 2 local options, and a quick family vacation/visit to several schools in NJ, CT, MA
Parents I'd Like to Meet
We'd like to hear from parents in the same quandry - parents of 7th and 8th graders, who are wondering about high school choices, and perhaps have visited boarding schools, as well as private high schools in their local areas.
Particularly of interest is perspectives on parenting from a distance, the value of 24 hour communities (as it compares to only day student campuses), safety of high schools (both day and boarding), etc.
We also tend to be involved in our child's school - suggestions on how to continue that best during the high school years.
