A lot of parents and educators are under the misconception that retaining a child in the lower grade levels has no long-term impact (negative impact). Sometimes the child will improve academically in the lower grades, but the impact will be felt later. I've only encountered a few parents who did not regret retaining their child.

If a child has a disability that affects learning, it is particularly important to have them evaluated and have their disabilities addressed appropriately via specialized instruction, services, assistive technology and more. If a child has a disability retention only increases the probability they will drop out of school later on.

Below are some links you may want to read before retaining your child, it could have a life long impact.

For those who want to "hear it from other parents," I'd also suggest going to the upper right corner of this page, where you'll see a rectangular box that says "Search Community By Keyword." Enter the term "Retention" to view past discussions on this topic.
