We are traveling from SC to the NC coast for our beach trip this summer.  It is going to be a 7 hour car ride for our family.  My 10 and 5 year old boys will need something to do along the way.

Any suggestions for educational stops along the way?  I do not know a lot about NC.

Re: Ideas for traveling up the NC coast with kids
I just wanted you know that we had a great time on our vacation! The kids enjoyed the ferry rides and the Outer Banks were nice. It was a long trip (8hrs) for us, but we can say we went! :)

Thanks for your input...

Thanks for the information. From what I can see, we are staying just below Roanoke Island. Sounds interesting.

We are taking the ferry route to get to Cape Hatteras which should be an adventure in itself. The first ferry is a little over 2 hours and the second is abt 30 mins. We have made the reservations so we have all the information. My kids have not stopped talking about it. I think they are more excited about the ferry ride than the beach trip itself!

Consider visiting Roanoke Island.(aka the lost colony) There is a reproduction of a 16th century ship, the Elizabeth II at a harbor called Festival Park where you take a tour of the ship and/or sail on it, watch historical reinactments kind of like at Williamsburg, visit the museum, go along a bike path, do shipbuilding arts and crafts etc. It's fun and educational for kids and adults alike. Check out their calendar at www.roanokeisland.com/

ps If you head to the NC mountains at all, my kids loved taking the out of bounds roof tour at Biltmore estate in Asheville and also loved going to a place called "sliding rock" near Brevard.

We are staying just north of Cape Hatteras. We are definately going to explore that area. We have never been to the NC coast, always the SC coast (Which I know every square inch of). My sister decided that we needed to be a little more adventurous and go to the Outer Banks. I'm looking forward to it, just a little nervous about ferries and the drive. I have been sitting at my computer and pulling up map after map, just to figure out where i am going. Adventures are fun...

The one place you should not miss is Cape Hatteras. It is worth scheduling your trip so that you drive by there during the daylight hours. There is an historic lighthouse, and a beauful beach to explore
