I got into a conversation with another member earlier in the week, talking about our avatars, the little, teeny pictures that in one shot sum up our personalities, or at least can.

Mine are my kids, taken last summer as part of my son's senior portrait session at a friend's studio.  At the time, my kids were 16 and 6, although he's just moved off to college and he's a couple of months from being 18 and she's about to be a big second grader.

What I've noticed, is for those of us who aren't using our kids as an avatar, we have a LOT of pet lovers here.  We have tons of dog owners, and many of them look like they've been part of the family for years (a little grey in the muzzle never hurt anyone).  We have big dogs and tiny dogs.  We have a few cats, and even a pet bird avatar.  I know in one group, we even had a contest to name someone's avatar.  We have some cartoon characters and some movie "stars."

So my question is, who/what is your avatar, and why did you pick that picture?

Re: Our Avatars
Mine is of me with my son and daughter. I picked that photo because it always makes me smile when I look at it .

Re: Our Avatars
My avatar is just my picture, this way other members have a face with a name, sometimes maybe I will change in to the family picture but for now it's just me.

Re: Our Avatars
I think we pick avatars that represent where we are at some point in life or where we like to be or what made us happy in that point in time. I change mine on occasion and it has to do with a memory or where I stand at that point in my life. Sounds strange but that is just me.

Re: Our Avatars
Well right now I don't have one because I haven't had a chance to upload any pics, but I guess we find comfort in the things we love even if it is a pic of a dog or of our family. My lil pic that I have now is of a man and a woman with a child and that best describes my lil family.

Mine changes often, I get bored with the same picture, and some times it just reflects my mood.

Thanks for sharing, beachcomber. We do have quite a few nature lovers in the group too.

I've noticed quite a few changes in avatars in the past few weeks; does anyone want to share the significance of their photo choice?

Mine is of one of my favorite places in the world. The ocean. I love to go there as often as I can and just sit, listen, watch, reflect or do nothing. It is peaceful and as close to heaven on earth as you can get.

Re: Our Avatars
I like to change mine up a lot, I've had my son, myself, toucans, flowers, sky, and currently I have sea turtles. I usually pick nature avatars, I enjoy taking photo's of scenery so that's the motivation behind my pictures. Speaking of which I think it's time to change it up again. :p

It seems we've gotten quite a few new members, so if anyone would like to describe their avatar and introduce themselves, I'd like to say WELCOME!

Re: Our Avatars
Great question MagnetMom,

My avatar is "The dancing girls" by Degas. I love Impressionism.
Almost 10 years ago when I was studying in the UK, and just before I graduated, I happened to go to the Degas exhibit at the National Art gallery in London. I loved two prints by Degas that I at the time couldn;t afford to buy ( you have too many "other" expenses as a student as you all know). On my farewell party, (terrible weather day!), my best friend surprised me with those two prints! One of them you see as my avatar! That was the best surprise I've ever had! :)

My daughter likes to "give me the stinkeye" at the dinner table. So that's what we're doing together in my pic.

Well, it explains why every time I read one of summerblue's responses, I'm suddenly hungry. Chocolate, cupcakes....mmmmmmmm :)

Fun topic.....

I change mine once in a while to some sort of confection. If you knew me, you'd know it's fitting! Fun, Sweet and Bad for you! hahahahahha

Re: Our Avatars
Well, that explains it. The vinegar on the fries is staple here, unless he's using Buffalo Wing Sauce. We don't even have ketchup. :)

Now to get him the lyrics to "Oh, Canada!" so he can get past the first line.

Haha,
Well I pronounce your son an Honorary Canadian!
I will have his Canadian bacon tie and Maple Syrup cologne shipped out asap. :)
And a tip to fit in: we like vinegar on our French fries and always order your coffee by saying "I want a double double".

Re: Our Avatars
Hey, hockey, my son's dorms are doing a bunch of orientation and "getting to know you" activities as they move into the dorms. They're using the Olympics as their theme, and he was ecstatic to tell me that his floor is Canada, eh? He's probably the only kid from the U.S. at the bowling tournaments who can't wait for the Canadian anthem to play. So he probably does wish he was a Canadian like you :)

Re: Our Avatars
My avatar is of my daughter Alexandra at a tournament in February.
I usually like to change depending on my mood, but since there was another poster on here with a very similar screen name, I kept this avatar to avoid confusement.
My other two I use are a cartoon Apple talking to an apple core. He’s saying in a bubble “You’re so hard core!”
My other says “You so wish you were Canadian like me” : )

This is Ramsey, a charming rogue who wandered onto our back porch and chose to live with us for about 6 months. He's named for Ramsey Gordon of Hell's Kitchen fame -- due to the fact that he was loud, opinionated and always hungry.

We miss him.

The pic is of me. Usually pics of me my eyes look like I am on something LOL. Which is funny because I don't even like to take aspirin when I have a headache so I don't know why LOL. This one I was playing around after I got a hair cut and I actually liked it of me LOL. One of very few that I like of me.

Re: Our Avatars
I LOVE this thread!! I love hearing stories behind photos...

My picture was taken on Baker Beach here in San Francisco almost two years ago, right after I moved to the city from Chicago. I had been riding on the back of my friend's motorcycle and we stopped to enjoy the late afternoon on the beach. You can't see it, but the Golden Gate Bridge is to the right of me. It was such a beautiful winter day...totally a "hey, I live in California now!" moment for me!

Re: Our Avatars
My avatar is... Me! On other social networks I belong to, I change my avatar often to reflect my mood, or what's been going on in my life. But as a moderator for this community, it's important for my avatar to be a real face/person. It's also a little more difficult for me to change my avatar since it's hardwired into the "Email the moderator" link at the bottom of every page :)

It's cool to learn about everyone's pets.

Re: Our Avatars
This little guy was my daughter's pet cockatiel, Bobby. We bought him as a baby, and he quickly became a close, well-loved member of our family. He loved to be scratched behind his head (he practically fell asleep when we scratched him there!). He loved to fly around the house, land on one of our shoulders and preen himself.

Unfortunately, Bobby died a few months ago, at about the age of 6. My daughter was heart sick over losing Bobby. She cried and cried. However, Bobby will live in our hearts and memories for a long time to come.

Re: Our Avatars
This is our dog Vicky. She's about a year and half old. We got her as a puppy from a shelter. They told us she was half Lab & half Gordon Setter.

Well, we got her home and bathed her, took a good look and knew she certainly wasn't either of those breeds. We thought she might be Beagle mix, but she kept growing and lengthening. She's now about 60#, tall and skinny with lots of extra skin around her neck.

Our current guess is Coonhound - probably Treeing Walker - or some mix thereof. She's very different from what we'd been looking for, but a sweetheart just the same.
