My 8 yr old daughter was recently diagnosis with dyslexia and ADHD by a nueropsycologist. Her school did an evaluation and said she did not qualify for an IEP. They are suggesting a 504 plan. She is in DC public schools where the teacher nor the special ed teacher have experience with teaching a child with dyslexia. What public school can i send her to in DC?

Re: public schools for children with dyslexia.
Look for an Orton-Gillingham specialist in your area. You will most likely need to look for some outside resources to help your child. Also, you might consider hiring an advocate to help you get an IEP in place for your daughter. Since you had an outside test done, your advocate should be able to use this test to receive an IEP in your school. It might take a little battling but will be worth it in the end.

You may have difficulty finding a public school in your area which addresses her learning needs. Some schools in neighboring counties do have classes for students in the Wilson Reading Program, a certified Multisensory Language program. You could also check out the Siena School in Silver Spring MD. It is for bright dyslexic students and though it is a private school, there are scholarships available.
