From George Sanchez at the Daily News:

That's right folks, Cortines is coming over the hill!

LAUSD Board of Education member Tamar Galatzan is hosting a community town hall meeting with Cortines this Thursday, Feb. 19 at Grant High School.

The meeting is scheduled to run from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Considering Cortines rises by 4 a.m., this is a late night, but also know that if past meetings are any example, he'll speak for 15 minutes tops then reserve the rest of the meeting to answer questions from parents and community members.

Grant High School is at 13000 Oxnard St. in Valley Glen 91401 between Woodman Ave.& Coldwater Canyon Ave.

First off, he's coming to Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks on March 18th, if you want to hear what he said himself. Secondly, if you want a play-by-play account of the meeting, try this: www.lausdmagnetangel.com/2009/cortines-meeting

And some school communities are better sharing power than others. We have a great principal, but she's always pointing out loopholes in our by laws where either a tyrannical principal or a parent with an agenda could make our school site council a living nightmare.

I definitely see though in the next few months how critical a dynamic SSC will be for a school to function without the layers of bureaucracy.

I did too.

For the most part, I believe that schools have a better idea of what they need than the monolith Downtown. However, and this goes back to many discussions in the past, everyone (parents, teachers, principals, administrators) NEEDS to become involved in their school. It's not just about the "squeaky wheel gets the oil," but making sure all levels in the school get their needs taken care of. *sigh*

I definitely appreciated that he didn't shy away from questions, including pretty tough ones.

There will be a lot of changes coming down, but I like that there will be more decisions made at the school site, and not at downtown. And wherever possible the cuts will be made outside the clasroom.

I attended the meeting as well. I appreciated Cortines' desire to conduct meetings like this in order to get parents, teachers and administrators involved and informed. His direct approach is much needed during CA's budget crisis.

At least we have a good idea where he stands regarding the money LAUSD will receive from the nation's stimulus package. It was interesting to hear that he was a somewhat scared to receive the money, and to start/continue programs that may have to be terminated in the next couple of years.

Turn out was pretty substantial for a last minute meeting. Cortines took questions from the audience for well over an hour and not much of it was pretty.

But I was impressed at how directly he responded, even though he didn't have a lot of good news.

Anyone else attend who'd like to comment?
