Hello, group:

Teachers: on average, what is YOUR experience of how much time you spend/spent on behavior management/discipline?

If you would, can you tell me at what level you are/were teaching now and on what you based your estimates or answers, and whether you're in a public/private school?

Look forward to hearing the answers!

Re: Time spent on behavior/classroom management
I've been teaching for 11 consecutive years. I've taught K, 3 & 5. I currently teach kinder. I spend every minute of my day managing kids. My lessons are structured around management, my interactions with kids are focused on management ie " The tiger hunts his prey by -- Jose we look at the teacher when she's teaching -- The tiger hunts his prey by waiting in the shadows for the unsuspecting prey -- Kerry this is a good time to listen to the teacher not talk -- You see boys and girls, tigers wait for animals to not expect that they are coming before they pounce, that's how a tiger is able to survive as a hunter -- Johnny, we sit with all 4 legs of the chair on the floor -- when you start your animal research today I want you to -- Claire will you know what to do if you are digging in your backpack right now -- I want you to list 5-10 behaviors your animal does to make sure they have food to survive. That's what many lessons sound like in a classroom and then we wonder why our child isn't learning????

Re: Time spent on behavior/classroom management
Great suggestion -- I had looked for a group like that but couldn't find it easily. Now, based on your answer, I found it and reposted it!

And, yes, I'd hoped to have folks include what levels they were responding to so I'd have a better feel for the characteristics of the estimate!
