Re: How The Teen Brain Works..info as to why they do what they do
Interesting discussion post and one that I was surprised to see didn't have any responses. The research on teen brains shows overwhelming evidence that certain portions of the brain, particularly those related to logical thinking are not as developed as those related to impulsive reaction. Thus we see teens reacting quickly and often because of an emotional impulse rather than taking the time to think about the logical consequences that a decision might hold. The research journals phrase the evidence in far more sophisticated terms, but the layman's version seemed more applicable for the discussion here.

I'm just as amazed as you are. I thought that more parents would respond to this. Interesting how the brain works and especially with teens. I was being helpful not for just the parents but for their children as well.

Let's keep it going with the hope of drawing continued involvement from the community of parents. I'm going to re-post this topic in the middle school thread with a slightly different slant, "brain development and the answer to why your middle schooler acts impulsively". What do you think?

Wordwoman, love the handle first of all, secondly, I would love to hear more about your role as a middle school literacy coach. I'm not familiar with this title. Do you work in the schools or as a consultant outside the classroom?

I work within the schools. I am in charge of teaching content area teachers research based literacy and differentiated instructional strategies. I model lessons in classes, help teachers with planning and special events, write grants, order books for our book room, run meetings, etc. I am Word Woman because that is what the kids call me at school. I do the word of the day announcements.

Wordwoman, are you on twitter? If so, what's your handle? I would love to tell folks about the work you do. Excited to hear there is someone of your calibur in the middle school community. I encourage middle school parents to build their child's support team with amazing people. You would be an incredible addition.

Hi Joe,

Literacy Coach and Math Coach are actual positions in Los Angeles Unified School District schools. I'm not sure where wordwoman is located, but there are likely thousands in Los Angeles alone (although not all have the cool screen name). :)

The Literacy Coach and Math Coach mentor teachers on campuses that need a little help. My daughter's school lost the coaches last year due to budget cuts, since schools with APIs around 900 are felt to be doing fine without them, and the teachers on campus take on the position as part of their responsibilities.
