The problem is that some things that seem like common sense turn out to be much more complicated than they first appear. Or only seem like common sense after research has been done. Or seems like common sense to one person but seems completely wrong-headed to another.
No one is going to expend the resources toward a treatment of a problem unless they can confirm the nature of the problem.
Some people might surmise that bullying is a result of nasty parenting. This study indicates that there is at least a major neurological component. Just saying that Johnny doesn't know any better, let's tell him to play nice, is not going to cut it if his brain is flooding him with endorphins every time he makes another kid cry.
The next step would be to determine how to overcome what appears to be a basic animal urge. Can it be ameliorated with medication like ADHD or bi-polar disorder? Or can it be treated with psychotherapy? Is it present in all people but only worse in some people? Or only triggered/activated by something else? Or?
Bullying is pleasurable. Unfortunately, it is pleasurable in the same way doing drugs, overdrinking, pleasuring oneself se x ually, is pleasureable. Yes, people enjoying doing things that they know are wrong. Why do they do them? It provides an escape from dealing with a situation in the proper way. Instead of dealing with issue of not having what other have, it is easier for the bully to take, whether it is money, possesions or control. Evidence that bullying is pleasureable is not new. Of course they like doing it. The would be insane to do something and then immediately afterward be like "Oh, I really hated doing that." Money,time should be spent on figuring out how to help all kids deal with reality of life in the proper way, not on telling us things that are common sense anyway.
The field of neuropsychology is very interesting. I remember when first looking into the possibility of treating my son, diagnosed with AD/HD at the age of 7, with stimulant medications, we first worked with a medical doctor trained in the neuropsychological specialty of brain imaging using SPECT scanning, pioneered by Dr. Daniel Amen. I learned many fascinating details of the neurological functions, and dysfunctions, associated with the human brain.
However, all the expertise and study in this field did not help predict the intolerable side-effects my son experienced from 2 years of pharmaceutical trials, experimenting with nearly every stimulant and alternative medication available for children with AD/HD at that time. In the end, my son fell into a percentage of children who suffered more from the "cure" of stimulant meds than from the "disease" of AD/HD, because they triggered a dopamine overload in the frontal cortex of his brain, causing horrific psychotic responses, chronic sleeplessness and loss of appetite. We took him off of these meds permanently.
What we've learned in the aftermath is that the human mind and associated neuro-chemical system is a miraculous interactive infrastructure that can be successfully "rewired" by means other than pharmaceuticals. We learned to help our son improve his attention, academic success, and generally happiness through acceptance, loving support, strong parent advocacy, modeling responsibility for one's own actions and the world around us, and projecting our strong belief in his ability to succeed.
Aside from genetic predispositions, modern society abounds with negative influences on our children's behaviors that include self-indulgent and violent images on TV, in the movies, on the Internet, radio, music CDs, advertisements, video games, and a proliferation of material possessions children are so often given in lieu of much-needed one-on-one attention from adults. Our children are bombarded with such visual and aural stimulii often from the time they are babies, and all the while the receptive and rapidly-growing neural pathways in their little brains are literally forming in ways that adapt to receive and respond to this stimulii. Is it any wonder that research is finding the brain "wiring" of child bullies predisposed to experiencing pleasure from sounds and images of violence and suffering?
Nature vs. nurture is a long-debated cause-and-effect component of psychological disorders, including sociopathic tendencies. However, I truly believe in the human capacity to overcome genetic and physiological limitations through the power of love, purposeful effort and perserverance. Getting our kids' minds engaged in something other than television, computers and video games for a majority of the day doesn't hurt, either.
MOney and timne spent on research is never wasted unless it was funded by a big Pharma to see whether they can come up with a med for their agenda, in this case bullying! Whenever, there is a change from the "norm" brain is bound to fire different stimuli. Whether it is a reversible phenomenon that can be "cured" by psycological intervention is another story.
Why a child behaves differently can be attributed to so many factors. I remember reading a study in past where bullying was linked to genetic and environmental factor (acquired!). We all agree that a child's environment plays such an important role in shaping up his personality. Parents who are concerned about their children's behaviour should really consider looking at all aspects. I don't believe that brain scans showing pleasure on pian infliction should automatically mean those children are wired that way and should be put on med. This is yet another way of labeling a child which I so not agree with.
I guess that is why they have comedy we all enjoy some one slipping on a banana. We know it hurts like ouch!!! but we enjoy it anyway would this be a subtle way for us to get out are internal bullying ? without actually hurting someone ?
