I have a 4 year old who is supposed to start Kindergarten in fall 2009, We are attending the best public parent participation preschool I could find( Edward Kelley the old one room school house on Bradshaw) and most of the parents have been urging me to decide on a school now as we will need to register this time next year.

I live in the Rosemont area of Sacramento which is in the Sac City district, plainly speaking most of these schools are crap. My son is such a smart gifted kid (like every parent thinks) I feel like I would be a neglectful parent if I put him in one of these schools. I had always thought I would either home school him or put him in private school, I figured by the time he was ready we would be able to afford private school but that doesnt look like its going to happen.

My uncle lives in a very affluent area and the home school for his address would be for Del Dayo Elementary which is rated 10's all around and less than 10 minutes from my home. I would love to get him into this school or one of the other top rated schools in his district, I know it is dishonest but I am more than willing to lie to get my child the quality education that he deserves. What I wonder is how risky this is, how thoroughly they will check it out, and what happens if I get caught. Does anyone know about inter-district transfers are they easy or hard to get? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. I am also open to quality charters and good but reasonably priced private or Catholic/Christian schools.

Thanks Again, Lisa

That's some creative thinking.... except it's a wash as the cost of private schools would be much less than they spent on those overpriced homes.

They could have rented apartments.

All that article does is justify the need for vouchers, so if your local school isn't up to snuff, you have the option to take the money and run to an appropriate private school.

This crazy system of school district monopolies has a whopper of an unintended consequence:

"Did School District Boundaries Lead to Mortgage Crunch?"
Excerpt:
"... When we all bid for houses in better school districts, we merely bid up the prices of those houses…. [Congress should not] be too quick to condemn families that borrowed what the lending system offered rather than send their children to inferior schools."

If you truly want what's best for your chlidren, you would do what it takes to get the best education for your child. If that means postponing the purchase of a house so you can live in a better school district then so be it. I don't bemoan your request to the school district, but I could see that you would surely be at the back of the line behind those that DID choose to live in the area.

There were lots of places I wanted to live that had amazing homes at amazing prices, but I chose to live elsewhere to get the right school district for my kids.

For those that lie and give a friend or families address, what do you tell your child to say in class when they are asked to repeat their address and phone number. Would you really tell your child to lie? I think that would give your child mixed messages.

Re: Useing a family members address who is in a better district?
I was very disappointed when i read some of the replies on this discussion board. we are all parents that have been brought together for one important reason, WE WANT THE BEST FOR OUR CHILDREN!!!! so for the ones that say make the sacrifice and move to the better neighborhood, i say walk a mile in someone else's shoes before an assumption is made. i was renting an apartment in a nice neighborhood. my children were going to a great school, then i was able to purchase our very own home(you know the great american dream) threw new York City affordable housing. i am the proud owner of a brand new home for my children to enjoy but the schools in the area where my home is are all failing schools with a lot of bullies from the neighborhood attending it. the best school where i live isn't my child's zoned school so i've been at the board of education mostly all summer trying to fight to get them into a better school. i feel as if a parent will settle for less with the education their child id receiving then so be it, but when a parent is committed to the child's education there should not be any boundaries on schools or locations
