Children who have reading disorders tend to avoid reading, because it is hard and discouraging.  Understandably, if they don't like to practice reading, then they don't develop fluency to help them read faster and so the downward spiral goes!  What is a parent to do?  Many kids like to watch television and it gets a really bad rap.  Here is the single best way to make it work for you.  To continue: tinyurl.com/n9ujs9

Re: Easiest real life tips for boosting reading skills
I used CC, earlier on to help NN build fluency, I also used some of the other tricks, such as the Whimpy Kid series. What I found useful, is to try to find mandated reading material, and dropped it down to two grade levels. NN found it much easier to read, especially if it was boring, and than she was more eager to read the material at grade level. I find this helps in reading speed, and the building of vocabulary, but not in word decoding skills and deriving meaning around words.

We found the the closed caption really worked when our daugther complained that she didn't like it because sometimes the words came up before the actors said them and she was reading them before they were spoken. It was then and there we determined that CC was for us and it was turned on for all our TVs :)
