There have been lots of breaking news stories about the recent supreme court decision regarding a "special education" student. There have been lots of accusations and comments from this decision including "bankrupting" public schools, removing the "spirit of collaboration" between parents and schools or a "free ride into fancy private schools" and "skipping the public schools altogether". Re: The true impact of the Forest Grove supreme court
Spedexaminer, as the parent of a child whom the public schools refused to evaluate for special ed until 8th grade, at which time he was found eligible for an IEP with ADHD, plus SLD's in reading and writing, I can attest to the problems of getting students the services they need. My husband and I were able to afford private placement for him, but I know not everyone could do that. I do, however, also understand the financial implications and how there may be negative consequences to other students in the school systems. I'm wondering what will transpire....

It is not about footing the bill, it is about eligibility and serving those students who need it.
Forest Grove argued that public school's should have a chance to serve, yet they refused to make the child eligible under 504 or IDEA and therefore refused the student a chance to "try" the public school program.

Re: The true impact of the Forest Grove supreme court
I don't think we'll see the "true impact" of this court ruling until other individual families seek private placements for their children, and find out how individual school districts really respond. Call me cynical, but I doubt most districts are going to "foot the bills" without more legal wrangling....
