My daughter just wrote her first ever English final yesterday.  Luckily she was provided with a reader.  A volunteer who reads out the questions to the student.  My daughter said this made a huge difference with many of the grammatical questions.

Just thought I would share as it may be helpful to request this service for your child.

Re: Getting a reader for finals.
My son uses the read back feature on his laptop/word. The teachers at his school provide class notes and outlines in word to make this feature accessible to the students. This is particularly helpful when the material is first introduced and there is unfamiliar vocabulary. He also uses the feature to edit his own work. Often times he can't read his writing because the spelling is so far off. The reading feature let's him listen for mistakes.

Next year he'll start to use Kurzwiel which I think is similar to read and write gold. I support any technology that will allow him to be more independent!

Wonderful news! My daughter uses a reader in class and on high stakes testing (when it is not for reading). I believe it makes a huge difference in her outcomes.

Re: Getting a reader for finals.
I read for a number of my students--it is a huge help. The accommodation can also be very helpful for high stakes standardized testing if that accommodation is allowed.

FYI, there is another option, Read & Write Gold software which has a text-to-speech feature. While the computer voice is not as good as human, it is getting better. (There are competitors to Read & Write Gold--that's just the one I am familiar with.) Some students like the computer reading better because it allows them to be more independent.

Re: Getting a reader for finals.
I am so glad that she was able to benefit from this accommodation. My son has this option listed in his IEP. Even with hw, he sometimes need help reading the questions. It makes a huge difference!

I am sure for finals it removed a lot of unneeded stress for her.
