I just recently had confirmed thru having our daughter tested that she has Dyslexia and Dysgraphia.  My daughter repeated first grade again this year in the public school system.  We live in Georgia (which I have been told  our school district is great and bad for dealing with learning disabilities.  She had an EIP for 1 year and we finally got her an IEP for next year.  She will be going into second grade next year. She has been tutored thru a wonderful lady for the last 18 months that is a licensed therapist thru NILD.  She has greatly improved from the level she started off at, but has been at a slow pace.  She just started taking therapy instead of tutoring that helps with her disability. I want to make sure she is getting the right help needed now.  Like many of you parents we don't want it to be years down the road and wish we had tried another learning program. Does anyone know of the best program we can use to help our daughter learn how to read and write with this disability?  I have been told that the best is Orton Gillingham program?  Thank you for any information/suggestions you can provide.

Orton Gilligham and Wilson are the best. Wilson is based on Orton. I have just recently requested a listed of qualified tutors in O-G through NILD. There seem to be more public school teachers certified in Wilson. I dont know why. My best friend is a ED teacher and uses Wilson . She used to teach 3/4th grade students. But, this year recently decided to switch to k-2. Her decision was largely based that she would be able to prevent the lag and teach them to read rather the remediate. She told me last night that there were several K children that still did not even know their alphabet. That is not able to even recite it.. not just written. THat most of the children were not receiving appropriate teaching methods until after 3rd grade. 3rd grade is the bench mark in our state to say.. oh.. ok they have a problem.

Good suggestion to find the best tutor possible. In addition to having complete training in the instructional methodology, it is also helpful if the tutor has had experienced in related programs such as Great Leaps, read naturally for fluency, hand writing without tears for handwriting, a writing/comprehension program etc. This way he or she can address a wider scope of your child's needs.

Be sure to find out how they plan to assess your child's current skill level and how they plan to track and monitor progress.

I completely agree with the previous posts that OG is the best. The only recommendation I can make is that you find the best tutor available in your area, it made a world of difference for us. There are many tutors that claim to be qualified, and they may be able to help a regular child that does not have the issues of a dyslexic child. But in our experience I can tell you that we went to several tutors until we found one through the OG academy (you have to call them to get a list of certified tutors in your area, www.ortonacademy.org) that really made a difference. The sooner you start with the program with the right teacher, the sooner you will see results. Do not waste time with well intentioned tutors that have some training but not the full program.
Good luck!

Good to hear, Buckaroo. I think some of the programs seem to be a bit regional. Lot's of schools in the East use Wilson and I've heard of schools in the West using Singerland. LiPS seem to be everywhere!
