My daughter wil be starting high school in Aug.  I went to view the high school tonight and I could not believe what I saw. All of the classrooms have numbers next to them. Except, the special education rooms. They have a separate area of classrooms with a SIGN next to the door "Special Education"

Polling:

Does you child go to a classroom that is labled?

Re: Polling Pls. resond -Segregating Special Education Students
My son goes to a special ed school, and I like it much better than mainstreaming. He is getting all his needs met, learning the skills he needs at a slower pace that will allow him to function in the real world, and not throwing him headlong into the lions den without the tools he needs to be able to cope with it.

Re: Polling Pls. resond -Segregating Special Education Students
for special services for my son the teachers take him either to the conference room or to the media center. they move around, the kids are in different environment that way they don't feel any different, they just feel special. for reading and re-taking the test they take him to a table at the back of his room.. I really don't need if this is Ok or not, but he feels good about it and for me that's very important. they only things I do not like is that the teachers make comments about L/D students in which they can hear them.... my son with a confused face told his dad yesterday that his teachers were talking about him and one of them said.. "why they don't take him to another school'(referring to us, the parents) just because I complained to the principal of what they are doing to him during spelling test. (since the principal pulled their ears,) the teacher said that dyslexia kids has to do the spelling test exactly like the others kids!! my son is getting F, and they keep saying it is ok. he learned the world in the order he write them from the board, plus the reading words. !!my poor boy did not want to go to school yesterday , due to the fear of taking the spelling test.. I believe that no matter our kids conditions they deserve respect and support not be treated as "ADNORMAL KIDS) ALL KIDS ARE THE SAME, THEY ARE THE BLESSING FROM GOD"

Re: Polling Pls. resond -Segregating Special Education Students
I agree that the classrooms sould be numbered as the rest of the classrooms are. In my daughter's middle school, the issue came up in the school directory. The general education teachers were listed under the heading "Teachers" but the special education teachers were under the heading "Staff", right there with the custodian and secretaries. I pointed tthat out to the principal; to his credit, it was changed in the next year's directory. Whle I honestly don't think the administration means to suggest that the special education students are second class citizens, they need to be more cognizant of appearing to do so--and we need to keep pointing it out so that they start to consider the issue more.

Re: Polling Pls. resond -Segregating Special Education Students
In our public school, the special ed classrooms are "in the mainstream", in the hall with all the other classrooms. The kids have lockers next to each other, travel the hall and building together etc. The only exception would be an area that requires different equipment such as for PT and OT - these rooms happen to be near the cafeteria - a bit off the beaten track. But, kids typically spend only 30-60 minutes in these classrooms for specialized services.

Labeling the rooms is inappropriate in my book. By labeling the room, they are labeling the kids. Rather than promoting a culture of inclusion based on common ground, the labels focus on the differences and can create a hierarchy of "normal" and "special" students.

I'd let your concern be known - perhaps they just need to have this issue pointed out to them.

No. Can you talk to administration about changing that during the summer and getting some new numbers for those rooms? I would start at the school level and go up if needed. If you could possibly get some other parents to join your cause you may get further, maybe even get a signed petition to submit to the school board.

He's not in a room that is labeled. They are in a completely separate building. His grade level is referred to as LS (Life Skills) and then his assigned grade level. Although I am not that surprised that they would label a classroom, I feel it is inappropriate.
