He's been in Title 1 for two years for reading. Which I believe has held him back. They say he has comprehension problems and also needs to read 90 words a min. to pass 2nd grade. He is in Kumon (which his kumon teacher doesn't see a problem). The principal bad mouthed kumon when I told her he was in it, and said my son would never catch up. She said he has the lowest achievement test scores in the whole 2nd grade. He has B's in math and spelling and his class work for lan.arts is 80's-90's,100's. Now it was brought to my attention that he has a problem with math also. I don't understand? With B's. He get's one minute time readings with me every night since the beginning of school on 2nd grade books i have at home and does 85 to 90 words. They say he only reads 68 and will never catch up. He reads fine and i quiz him after reading and his comprehension seems fine. I don't understand. The principal was very persistent about keeping my son back. Is there anything I can I do?

Re: Principal wants to retain my 2nd grd son,Since half way through the school year
Oh, and Yes they did fail him for language arts which I still don't get. I did ask for his tests. This principal didn't give them up. I asked for a disability test to be done, the guidence council. did an IQ but I heard nothing of the results schools out. He had A in spelling-B in math and F in lang..but again all 90's and 100's in class work his tests are only 1/3rd of grade. He's stll in Kumon at the end of the second grade level this week. will be starting 3rd. hmmmm. I 'm gonna be needing that letter I think for not retaining him ,but I will have him evaluated by someone outside the school district first just to feel better.

I WANT TO THANK EVERYONE FOR ALL THEIR ADVISE AND SUPPORT! I used every bit of it. The retention info I printed out and sent to the principal (by accident) she let me know she was a member of NASP. I was fortunate to talk to someone in the school who verified everything I've been feeling. She told me not to let this woman bully me and that alot of kids are retained etc....wow did I feel relief! I also found the title I program they use on the internet and they don't use it properly AT ALL!. I have this evidence. So with all of your help and my continued journey I just wanted to say THANK YOU! And I will be back! (SMILES)!!!

Request a full educational evaluation (see link below for sample letter requesting eval). Also request the decision for retention be postponed until the results of the eval are in and discussed.

The school does not legally have to provide any special help unless the child is recieving special ed services. Does this child have special ed?

Also, ask to see the schools retention policy. It could state that it is the PARENTS choice to choose retention or not. Don't let him bully you.

It sounds as if the principal does not know what she is talking about and this needs to go to someone above her head.Maybe you should a professional expert test your child to see how the reading is and to see what he may or may not be lacking. Then finally get the results on the papper and front her with the results or change schools if you are not satisfied with one he is in.

The National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) has a policy statement against grade retention. It explains why it isn't effective to address learning difficulties, and why it can create significant problems now and down the road. Here's the cite:
