For better or worse, quite a few of us are at or near our 1-year anniversary of joining Greatschools, since it was about this time in 2007 that the reality of Schwablearning.org shutting down actually "hit home."

Bill Jackson said his goal in a year was to make Greatschools better than Schwablearning was, and I don't think it's there yet, but I'm grateful Greatschools has given us a way to stay in touch, and "saved the Schwab archives," and I'm glad that they're still working to make improvements to this forum.   Here's wishing for a Wonderful Holiday Season and Happy 2009 to Everyone!

Re: Happy Anniversary to Us! Happy Holidays to All!
The transition to adulthood is not an easy one and I have to remember that I too made my own mistakes -- and dealt with the consequences. When we watch our kids making errors in judgment that we think are so obvious -- we want to fix the problems -- but then how will they learn?

Healthy11: Your son will totally understand grade management better from now on -- I just hope that he keeps his scholarship! The Honors program rep. told my son that the first semester is often the most challenging because students are not just learning course material but also how to "do" college. That is probably true.

It's also frustrating to be parents who've been devoted to suddlenly feel unimportant in addtion to feeling unneeded. My son is so resistant to spending time with us -- like this Christmas, he only wanted to spend 3 days with our family (we went skiing/snowboarding for a week -- something that has normally been especially fun for our Floridian son). He flew home early because he wanted to be home with "the people who're really important" to him (his friends) all home from school together... Ug.

Hi OneOutofFive! Nice to see you here. I hear you and healthy11 about letting them figure it out on their own. Haven't gotten that far yet, but when we do -- I know it will be easier for her to let go than me :)

Re: Happy Anniversary to Us! Happy Holidays to All!
OneOutof5, I would have been happy if my son got the grades yours did....Ultimately, it was his fault, but it didn't help that the college he's attending had their experienced disabilities coordinator quit unexpectedly in July, and the replacement they hired at the last minute is CLUELESS. My son's greatest downfall was poor time management, and listening to someone tell him that if he were to retake a course, the new grade would substitute for the old..... he had been getting a "D" in one class, but decided that if he would retake it next semester, there was no point "stressing out" by taking the final. Instead of a "D" he got an "F" and he's now on academic probation, with his scholarship in jeopardy. AAARGH!

Re: Happy Anniversary to Us! Happy Holidays to All!
My LD son's grades weren't that great either -- he received one A and 4 Cs. He didn't get any of the accommodations that he was entitled to (the spelling accommodation would have helped tremendously) because he chose not to inform his professors (his choice). Initially, he informed the college's disabilities office and turned in the necessary paperwork. All he needed to do was actually tell his professors that he needed certain accommodations, but he didn't. (Pride.) He did enjoy his classes and most of the professors as well. He will be on probation with the Honors program, but I'm just glad that he at least passed his courses. This is something he'll have to learn how to handle now -- and as Dad used to tell him, "Mama can't do it all for you; some things ya gotta do for yourself!" (Now, it's just a matter of Mama accepting that fact :)

Re: Happy Anniversary to Us! Happy Holidays to All!
OneOutof5, It's good to hear from you again! My son just completed his first semester at college, too, and didn't want anyone's help, either (least of all mine.)
I won't lie ~ he could have done much better....but we still keep plodding along, taking things one day at a time....maybe you'd like to join Greatschools "College and Beyond" Group at community.greatschools.net/groups/11551, or see other old familiar Schwab names at www.millermom.proboards107.com
