My son was diagnosed with ADD at age 5 and used to have an IEP in elementary school, where the teacher had to make sure he knew what all his assignments where and when they were due, and provide prompting to get him to go from one activity to the next.

Then once he got to 3rd grade they dropped it and he's been doing great until he got to middle school.

Now he doesn't turn work in and gets 0's, sometimes he doesn't know what he is susposed to do, or what the assignment is, they also don't let him bring home his textbooks, he has a planner, but i don't know if its correct. etc.

How can I get him some help so that the teachers will check his planner and make sure he has the right assignments written down, due dates, etc and to remind him to turn in work that is due?  The teachers have a 0 tolerance policy on late work, and just write the assignments on the board or give them orally.  Also they expect all the students to hand in work on the due date without reminders.  This is killing him.

BTW,,,, when I sat in a conference for the team, they suggest I get the doctor to put him on adhd medicine, and if they read his chart, they'd see he has a heart condition and cannot take that medicine, and the other medicine is for HYPERACTIVITY and he doesn't have that.   Any other meds make him sleepy and zone him out and make him even LESS focused.  Believe me we tried everything, there is no medicine to take, just he's developmentally behind with his focus and organizational skills and needs. help.

I asked what behavior would the medicine help?  They said he just sits at his desk and stares, and doesn't go onto the next task.   Or he's not on task.   I said is he fidgeting or being disruptive to other students?... no he just sits there and is not on task.

Help.

Re: My son has ADD and needs help maybe a IEP in middle school
Hi itsme_jj:

Welcome to GreatSchools!

When you say "Then once he got to 3rd grade they dropped it ...", did you agree in writing that your son no longer needed an IEP for his ADD and that he should no longer receive services? If not, then you'll need to schedule a team meeting immediately to get his IEP updated and possibly a reevaluation.

It sounds like your son needs additional assistance in the classroom to help him organize his work and record homework assignments. My son, who's in 7th grade, doesn't have ADD, but he has an IEP for high functioning Autism. When he started 6th grade (the beginning of middle school), he really struggled; his situation sounds very similar to your son's. However, he had an aide with him in his classrooms, and she made sure he recorded his homework.

I would suggest the following:

First, request in writing that the school hold an IEP meeting immediately (it probably won't happen before the end of the year, but it should take place as soon as possible at the beginning of 2009);

Second, in the meantime, speak with his teachers individually and provide them with a list of his strengths and weaknesses. Also, ask his teachers if they can check with your son to make sure he's recorded his homework assignments, upcoming test/quiz dates.

Third, make sure your son gets enough sleep and a good breakfast before school. Doing this will help in keeping him awake and focused. Also, provide him with healthy snacks to eat during recess and lunch.

And finally, I'm attaching links to some very helpful articles here on GS regarding IEP's and ADD.

Good luck, and please keep us posted on your progress.

Re: My son has ADD and needs help maybe a IEP in middle school
Welcome. MSMomm has posted some excellent suggestions and articles to get you started. The only piece of additional advice that I have to offer would be if you note any strategies that work at home or he thinks would be helpful in school -- share these with his teachers in and among your lists of strengths and weaknesses.

Additionally, if the school feels that he does not qualify for an IEP, then I would pursue a 504 plan -- which will not modify instruction, but can provide accommodations -- like providing notes, checking to make sure assignments are copied properly, breaking assignments into more manageable pieces, etc...

Please keep us posted of how things progress.

Re: My son has ADD and needs help maybe a IEP in middle school
My daughter was diagnosed with ADD also at an early age. In public school she was doing well either. I went to all the SST meeting and she has an IEP. Gave her special education teacher to meet her needs because she tested below her grade level. the third grade, grades starts improving and after that that we're back where we started from. On a third grade level in the fifth grade, took out of regular public school and tried the program k12 they displayed it a lot on GS and I like it because it does a placement based on the IEP and she still does fifth assignements and she still is required to take the test that the state requires. They have outing where parents would meet and let the kids meet the other kids that attend the school. Should I keep her there or send her back to regular school? That what I'm pondering right now?

my grandson has add,and has a wonderful LD teacher in 5th grade.i,like you, do not use meds.however i have used herbs from Native Remedies.com but consult your doctor first. One thing i have noticed with my grandson,if he eats the junk breakfast in the cafeteria(doughnuts, bagels),he has a terrible day.when i fix him a high protein breakfast at home, his behaviour is better.sugar and high carbs do affect his behaviour.
Request a meeting/conference with Special Services Unit.mrs blankenship is a wonderfully helpful lady, and really cares about these children.

you stated that your sons' teacher says he sits and stares.has he been tested for epilepsy? i had a friend who done this-she would have blank stares-no seizure-she tested positive for epilepsy.just a thought.

Re: My son has ADD and needs help maybe a IEP in middle school
sounds like me ist you need to call an emergancy ppt and wave you 5 day parent leeter of notification that should get the ball rolling if you can afford a adocate for him thats even better go in with a list of what your child needs I had for my son in elementary school on his iep was the o policy is a no no you can have extra time on his iep for all assignments and i would argue that one
at the end of ever week I would get a letter or a phone call from his speical ed teacher with all his missing assignments and he had till monday to find them and hand them in he did not get 0's he in some classes did get a lower grade but he did not get a 0 the help him with feeling like he was succeeding
as far as the
its against the law for them to suggest you to put him on meds my son is medicated and he is now in high school and he chooses to medicate himself.
yo need to write down what you feel your son needs to succeed in the class room and go to the ppt with your list do your homework ,, it will pay off
wrights law is a book i bought that tells yo all theins and outs of a ppt and what you need to do for your son
documentation on what they do and dont do document document it will help in the end
