In another thread we have been talking about issues of dealing with schools in general & how frequently it seems that roadblocks are put up that hinder children getting what they need.

Since that thread has gotten very long, I thought that it might be helpful to start  another thread.  Readers could summarize comments that they had made on that thread & new readers who might not have looked at that thread could read & make comments here.

The heading listed above is the title of an article on Wrightslaw website at:  www.wrightslaw.com/nltr/08/nl.0219.htm  I encourage you to read this article, since the Wrights are a good & respected source of information for parents.

Re: How to Disagree with the School
Some interesting info from Wrightslaw I ran across.
Improving Schools: One Person is a Fruitcake, 50 People are a Powerful Organization

12 Things Parents (and Teachers) Need to Know About and Expect From Your Schools - and Yourself. Originally from Parent Leadership Associates; reprinted from www.Wrightslaw.com

If you think that you alone cannot do much to improve your school, you are probably right. You're more likely to get what you want for your child if you work with other parents. If you are in a school that is not parent-friendly, this is how you might be perceived.

Re: How to Disagree with the School
jdeekdee,

I know how you feel, and can more than relate to your frustration.

Please forgive me (my short-term memory is bad), I’m sure you’ve already said this, but could you refresh my memory on if your child got an IEP or if your still doing battle to get one?

If you haven’t read my Creative Tactics to get Spec Ed Services
already you may want to take a peek at what I had to do to get what my son needed in order to learn. It should give you a laugh or two if nothing else, it is sooo ridiculous what I had to do just to get them to comply with the law, but some of it included some humor. I find humor to be a wonderful mechanism in dealing with stress and depressing situations (it helps you to cope).

Re: How to Disagree with the School
jdeekdee,
I would suggest that you check out the LD onLine & wrightslaw websites for a start. You can get information & help from your state's Parent Training & Information Center. If you are not familiar with the center, send me a message listing the state you live in & I can get you the information.

Sharie's comments are great, if you are trying to get the school to communicate with you. When we had trouble with teachers communicating with parents, I would tell my staff to try & put a communication system into the IEP. Then the teacher & campus were obligated to do this.

Re: How to Disagree with the School

THEROSE- yes everything is ok with me now since we've been homeschooling for 3 yrs. I was just curious what answers I would get here.

SHARIE001- My dd never had an IEP. They were doing all this because I was trying to get IEP.
In my case, even requesting teacher to do the things you mention would do no good. NOTHING would have happened.
