My son graduated from the 5Th grade he is in a 12 to 1 to 1 class setting meaning  12 children 1 teacher 1 special ed and 1 para prof.  I had to pick a school for him that would had the proper settings for him where I live in Manhattan there are not many (public schools) only 3 not great .  Though we got lucky and he was accepted into a really good one that is hard to get into.  I received the official notice by mail from the regional office. I contacted his guidance counselor and told him this great news how happy we were.  He explained to me he needed a copy of this notice ASAP to send it over to the new school. He got back to me stating that they stated there would not be a class of this kind for my child per the school unless it will change in Sept he was very sorry out of his control.  I was floored,  what am I supposed to do sit around and wait until Sept and go down to the school so they can tell me sorry there is no such class.  He apologized gave me all the numbers I should contact if this should happen.  Middle school Drama this is not fair where will my son go if this happens.  This is an official letter from the region.  I am being told to hold tight how can I .  I am praying that come Sept they will implement a 12-1-1 class in this school.

Can anyone give me a thought or advice.  Yes he does have and IEP set for years.  I do have a lawyer for Advocates for Children which has not contacted me on this.  It's asame the way the system does not work for our children and all we want is for them to get the best education.  I have tried to get him into private school many times with the Nick letter no help ....this place is a mess....

Re: Middle School Drama Advice Needed
Where my son attends school, there are intermediate and junior high schools. Intermediates are 5th and 6th grades, and junior highs are 7th and 8th. At both schools, he had multiple teachers, about five a day. I don't know of any classes that are taught on the 5th or above levels here that are self-contained all day, except for beginning ESL classes, and SPED classes for children with serious behavioral issues, mental retardation, autism, or very severe physical disabilities (bed ridden, e.g.). This may be what you are facing. There are no self-contained classrooms for as little as twelve student in the upper grades. I would try to find this out first. Maybe, you could call the SPED Director for the district and ask?

I'm in California so this one's difficult for me as well but one of the things I learned was that my daughter's IEP changed a great deal with her move from elementary school to junior high school.

I suggest that a meeting is in order NOW with the new school -- not in September but as soon as possible. So that everyone can have a better understanding of your son's unique needs and how they may be met in his new school.

Re: Middle School Drama Advice Needed
I'm not sure how schools work in Manhatten. Since I live in a very small town and only have one elementary school, if a service or placement type is listed in my child's IEP, the school must make it happen in my only school of choice.

I have seen larger districts designate certain schools for specific specialities and placment. Maybe this is what you describe. I'm not sure if you can persuade the distrtict to revamp your school of choice - perhaps you could contact other parents of special ed kids to find out what they have been able to do.
