Has your school been notified of looming budget cuts?  We're in SoCal, and the entire state is suffering.  We're just curious how various districts are looking to handle the crisis.

Re: Budget Cuts
Here in Illinois, school budgets at individual districts and at the state level are up every year. In 2005, Illinois spent almost $21 billion on public schools, almost doubling the spending from 10 years earlier. Frankly, I am not aware of ANY districts that have had budget cuts, though I suppose there must be some.

When people claim there are "budget cuts", what it often turns out to be that spending is one area (e.g., art class) is reduced in order to pay for expanded spending in other areas (e.g., administration salaries).

If that what is happening in your district, then the focus should be on better controls on spending increases.

Re: Budget Cuts
My daughter is writing a persuasive essay about this very topic. It was interesting that she noticed that our family budget suffers because in order to run my classroom efficiently and effectively "mom needs to pay for school supplies out of her own pocket". Point well taken, but too true. Books, pens, you name it - as soon as the office supply stores start selling school supplies at a "discount" I go to find the best buys and teachers all over meet in the aisles to share in the misery of buying what we KNOW we shouldn't. Just try telling a teacher not to care about the quality of education. :)
