Nine universities are grappling with a good news/bad news scenario of epic proportions.  The nine schools have all recently received generous donations that anount to $45 million.  That's the good news.  The bad news, is the catch--they can not seek information on the person or organization donating the money, which raises ethical issues.

While the public often hears of anonymous donors, typically the school knows the donor and doesn't make it public.  The gifts varied and the schools were in the South or Midwest.  It's not even clear if they all received funds from the same donor(s).

For the article, read here.

While the schools all accepted the money, and in some cases signed agreements not to try to locate the donors, should schools take money from unknown sources?  Should the schools give the money back if they ever find out the sources were less than reputable?

Well, it doesn't sound like there are any stipulations tied to how the money is to be spent, other than providing financial aid to potential students, so thusfar I don't have a problem with it...It makes me wish my son was attending a university that got one of the $$ gifts, though, for better financial aid possibilities!

Re: Anonymous Donors Give $45 to Nine Schools UPDATE
A thirteenth possible university has received a donation, and there are a few theories out there. All the universities are headed by women.

USA Today has an interesting article located here: www.usatoday.com/news/education/2009-04-23-mystery-donor_N.htm

Hi healthy,

The schools are: The gifts ranged from $8 million at Purdue to $1.5 million donated to the University of North Carolina at Asheville. The University of Iowa received $7 million; the University of Southern Mississippi, the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and the University of Maryland University College got $6 million each; the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs was given $5.5 million; and Penn State-Harrisburg received $3 million.

I'll include another link, this one from Fox News: www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,516903,00.html

When I try to click on your link, my computer "objects." Since I can't read the article, can you list which schools got the gifts? I'm curious...

My personal feeling is if the gifts were given to use in an "unrestricted" fashion, then I guess it's less troubling to me than if there were "strings attached." For example, if the anonymous donor said "to be used to set up a lab for stem cell research" or "to be used for scholarships for students of a specific religion/race/gender/sexual orientation" then I believe it would be more important to know where the money is coming from (ie, a large pharmaceutical company, or a political group, etc.)
