I've seen several news outlets discussing college kids forgoing a trip home for Thanksgiving due to finances.  Even 20 years ago, I knew kids who couldn't fly back for three days given that winter break is just three weeks away.

While I felt sorry for the kids in the article, I hope they either banded together and shared a meal together, or found someone to go home with.  My son's floormates were all going home, so it wasn't an issue, but we could have easily had someone here for a week.

Here's the article: www.latimes.com/news/education/la-me-campus27-2008nov27,0,1601692.story

Re: Students Campusbound for the Holidays
I know there wasn't anything that organized at my son's school, but then again, they probably did internal outreach for the international students and the ones who weren't travelling home.

His cafeteria wasn't open from Wed evening and won't reopen until some time Sunday, so the kids in the dorms will have to make due with the kitchen in each dorm.

One nice touch, the school allowed the kids to "donate" up to 5 meals to a charity organization (really the value of 5 meals). It's a nice touch, but of course, my son has been home since Tuesday noon so that will be at least 15 meals by the schools accounting *sigh*

Re: Students Campusbound for the Holidays
My alma mater, which happens to be where my son currently attends, sent email to alumni in the area, asking if any families would be willing to host a student over Thanksgiving. I didn't respond directly to the school email, but told my son that if he had friends or knew of anyone on his dorm floow who didn't have a place to go, invite them. My son claimed that virtually everyone who wanted to go off campus had a place to be, and for those who didn't want to go off campus, the school was hosting a turkey dinner... :o)

Magnet: Many campus organizations organize Thanksgiving dinners for students who remain on campus. Additionally, more and more colleges have a faculty member who actually lives with their family in the dorms, called a faculty master. These folks organize campus Thanksgiving meals as well so that no one feels left out or alone.
