USA Today has the article here:www.usatoday.com/news/education/2008-05-28-college-gas_N.htm

In what might become an increasing trend, rural community colleges are going to a four day schedule with MW and TTh courses in order to accommodate student commutes against rising gas prices.

As an aside, several of the community colleges in the not-so-rural area of SoCal have gone to this schedule to accommodate student work schedules, studying, and the like.

Is it a trend you like?  Would you prefer 5-day a week classes?

Re: Rural CCs Cut Days to Save Gas
I always took T,Th or M,W, classes in college. I had to work so it was really helpful to me. And actually, when I got to my upper division courses, most of them were only offered once a week in the evening. I think having a modified schedule is a great way to allow students time for other things in their lives as well as saving on gas.

I think that this makes sense when you consider that technology today allows students to take classes virtually via the computer. Classes could potentially meet on Mondays and Wednesdays, and then be conducted virtually over the computer on Fridays.

minnie09,

Do your kids attend schools in Kentucky? I'm curious how it works for families.

A few of the school systems (all grades) in Ky. have been doing the 4 day week for 2 years to see if it will work out. They have just reported that all the kids are doing as well as they were with the 5 day week. I think this is a great idea.

Re: Rural CCs Cut Days to Save Gas
The community college that my son attends has been on a Monday-Thursday schedule for all of their summer sessions, as long as I can remember. During the Sept.-May months, they do, however, offer Saturday classes to accommodate business people, and it seems to work out well for all involved. (Including my husband, who teaches a Saturday class.)
