My daughter's birthday begins in just an hour, and I've been busy making cupcakes for the kids.  I'm the youth coordinator at a bowling center, and usually we have the day before Easter off from the leagues as a courtesy to all the families that might be on vacation, and we have a one-day tournament for the kids who don't go anywhere.  This Saturday would be that day.  So my daughter proclaims she doesn't want a birthday party, she just wants to bowl the tournament and bring everyone cupcakes--everyone can be 20 or 40 depending on who went away.  Thankfully, at a few minutes before 11, those are all frosted and sitting in the fridge and the freezer (frosting doesn't get as messy chilled).

In between batches all evening, I've been calling families and receiving phone calls from families about the state Pepsi tournament.  The results are running a little late this year (someone is busier than I am!), and so with a Monday date set for those who qualified to call and register, I'm answering a lot of questions, congratulating a lot of kids, and offering all kinds of scheduling advice.  Thankfully, multi-tasking comes easily and one can use a shoulder and a neck to hold a phone while frosting cupcakes :)

Earlier this week, my son was accepted at UCLA, and tonight he heard from Emory (no one really believed they'd send out emails at 8 am on a Saturday).  He's now 5 for 6, with his first choice still looming.  That school will be the one that will make him wait every day of the April 1st promised deadline.  He'll either be the luckiest kid in the world, or he'll learn a very valuable life lesson about how not everything comes your way.

So vacation is over, and I'm emotional over my little one's birthday and my big one leaving the nest in September, and no doubt I'm beyond exhausted because I haven't slept well all week since my husband has been out of town bowling Nationals himself.  I'd figure at some point exhaustion would win, but every night at 3 am I'm wide awake.

Am I rambling?  Probably.  I'm beat, but I have at least another hour of stuff to do, but I wouldn't want it any other way.  :)

Re: Cupcakes, Phone Calls, Acceptance Letters, and More
Phew! I am exhausted just reading your post, MagnetMom! What exciting times in your household full of lots of emotions, I'm sure. Sometimes I think the buzz we get from keeping frightfully engaged and busy with our kids' lives is what keeps us all going. I'll be thinking of you as you wait for the last college letter. I remember that year of applying and waiting for the college letters as the longest year in parenting history. Before you know it you'll be dealing with planning lists of what to pack for college and loading up the car.
