This is summer so this post might not be viewed until August or September but allow me to offer my advice.

Set your rules for homework and stick to them.  I have to have some down time whenever I get home from teaching school and so do kids.

Let them have their time doing whatever they like to do that is appropriate.

When "free time" or dinnertime is over, make it clear to your child that you expect them to work on any assignments from their teacher or teachers.

If you make it clear that you value education, then your child will value it.

I dropped my jaw when I saw the line about doing the work yourself.  Forgive me for saying this, but do not under any circumstances do that!  Ask yourself what you are teaching your child without saying it out loud, cheat if you have to do so!  What parent would ever seriously say that to their child?

You might have good intentions, but just offer help whenever it is asked from your child.  The teacher needs to know if the student understands or has mastered something that they have taught.  And if your child just simply does not do the work, then let them suffer the consequences.  It may be difficult to do, but it is much better to stand before the teacher's desk than it is to stand before the judge's desk in a courtroom!  If they learn early on that their actions or their lack of action has consequences, they'll have fewer problems as teens and even as adults.  (End of sermon!)

If you have a computer, there are many websites that offer help with homework.  Also, check out the textbook's website.  Many offer help for parents and students.

I personally think that homework should be minimal.  I allow classtime to complete most assignments.  Kids and their parents need family time these days.  Most of my parents have expressed that they appreciate my viewpoint about homework.

Re: A teacher's input
You may well do a good job of assigning worthwhile homework many other teachers do not. My daughter was given the assignment of the old bug collection. This assignment was given in January with a due date in March. How many insects do you think are out that time of year? I went online and purchased a bunch of insects online and we mounted them. 2 weeks before the assignment was due the teacher said they could work in groups?

Much of my daughters homework is just make work and that is what irks me.

If the homework is important it should be graded and returned promptly
