Lots of parents have contacted GreatSchools to find out how they can help their kids with math homework when they don't remember much math themselves. Do you have strategies, resources or tips that might help?

As a teacher, I can tell you that the math really hasn't changed, but the vocabulary has. For example, what we used to call borrowing and carrying is now called "regrouping". Ask your child's teacher for an extra copy of the math textbook that you can keep at home during the school year, and will return at the end of the year. I have done this with several parents, and once they see it again, it all comes back to them (of course, with new vocabulary). Also, many curriculum programs now have RETEACH pages, which are also valuable for both parents and students. Any good teacher would be happy to help you!

Re: How Can I Help With Math When I Don't Remember It?
The math I did in elementary school is so different to what they do now. It seems as if they're making the kids do the long math. What I've done with my daughter in 2nd grade (this past school year), is I went to the teacher and told her I wasn't sure how they were doing math, and that "when I went to school, we were doing it this way" and explained. She was nice enough to explain it to me. Of course this is 2nd graders and I'm not sure what grade your child is in. Hope it helps.

math.com has been helpful in getting me to remember how to do some math functions.
