USA Today reports on a test-program to start teaching about the 9/11 events in the curriculum.  Today's second graders weren't even alive when it happened, so there is an impetus to implement a curriculum.  The article appears here.

The curriculum is for middle and high school students, but does include difficult images and discussions.

What are your thoughts?  Are schools already teaching it?

Re: Classrooms to Institute 9/11 Curriculum
My concerns would be how it would be taught, by whom, and for what ages. Since it was developed by educators, politicians and others, it probably will have political consequences as far as it not being objective. Why will it have a muslim element involved in the program? Too many liberals teach many subjects from the point of view that the United States and George Bush are to blame for anything that happens to our country. If you think that this point of view is not instilled in the classroom, your are fooling yourselves. Subjects like this can be taught from an historical viewpoint, but alas many teachers are unable to leave their politics outside the classroom.

I think it is very important that 9/11 is taught in our schools. There is no way they can learn all the history of this world in 12 short years, you would have to begin with the Bible and that is forbidden, I think they also should be taught why the Bible and Prayer is forbidden in our schools now when our country was established and based by our forefathers on Christianity

Re: Classrooms to Institute 9/11 Curriculum
I've very happy it gets discussed. I was concerned before I read the article because I know my third grader is pretty sensitive, and there are things I'd rather have her hear about and approach me for more information--and this is one of them.

In a different vein, my son never got beyond World War II in any of his history classes (a sad joke we often lamented), and I'm not sure how you teach a lesson on 9/11 when the students are missing 50 years of history before it.

I'm very happy anytime we teach are kids what a true "hero" is--although athletes are wonderful people, it pales in comparison to the work that some people do day in, day out, for far less pay to protect the people they serve.

I know all the schools in our town still talk about it in September and hold a moment of silence. Of course we are a military town, so that may make difference.

I think 09/11 is part of the history of this country as well as others. I believe most authors of America History, Social Studies, and World Politics/ Religion are undated their new edition with 09/11.

I haven't seen any lesson on it yet, but my children had a home lesson their curiosity.
