Seeking to go Gutenberg 2.0, California's governor wants to move past books to online learning.

One thing in his way, the fact that there is only one computer for every 4 students on a typical campus.

Edweek.org requires guests to register to read this article here, but it's an AP article, so it's likely to find it on a different site without registering.

Would you be comfortable forgoing textbooks for kids?  Can we count on every family having a computer and/or an Internet connection?

Hi Tweety83,

At least in LAUSD, they've put off the adoption of any new textbooks for a year or two because of budget constraints, so this isn't going to be an issue for us.

I think they're discussing something along the lines of a Kindle machine, but at the rate kids lose books, I can only imagine how quickly they'd damage a Kindle.

And as someone who has to read textbooks online, there's a major difference. Assuming people start printing pages out, there'd be additional costs.

I think that is a good solution if we all could afford computers, unfortunately that is not the case in many low income communities. Given all of the cutbacks he is proposing, I dont see where he thinks they would have the money to buy more computers.
