Is anyone else as in love with this man as I am?

What are your thoughts on our new Superintendant? Do you think he'll affect change (positive or negative) in the district? How do you think the School Board is going to deal with him?

Re: Interim Superintendant Stanic
I think you are both right - Mr. Stanic (Dr.? I can't remember), had a good impact on 52 and I'm glad it passed.

And yes, high school busing should be available for kids who need it. However, I do see where it is a luxury more than a necessity and my suburban experience showed it was a mostly un-needed luxury. I'm not sure how much it is used in Dayton but I know plenty of parents on my street would have a hard time coming up with $30 or more for a bus pass for a high schooler at times. It puts a burden on already stressed parents. Then again when I was in a suburbia high long ago, the supply fee at the start of the year was more than twice the cost of the monthly bus passes and we paid for parking passes for the privilege to park at the school. School is costly no matter where you go, apparently.

My question to you is: How much does it cost for a family to adequately take care of their school age child (in regards to school costs)? What is a chronically poor or down on their luck family to do?

I suppose the dilemma of rent - food - prescriptions/medical care that we hear about for the poor so often is amplified for families when they have to add in costs for school supplies, clothes and transportation for school. I imagine this is truly difficult for some families.

Its too bad that schools have to be like social service agencies but that is true no doubt in some places, and very likely in Dayton.

I went along to the "Meet and Greet" at Cleveland Elementary back in September, and really liked the thoughts and plans he was putting forth. I feel he will definitely have a positive impact, especially with Issue 52 having passed, (and I think he was part of the reason it did pass).

I too am thrilled about the reinstatement of art and music. Though frankly, having lost an hour and 10 minutes out of their school day, I'm not sure how my younger kids have time for it. I'm extremely distressed over this development (my children go to the DPS school that absorbed a charter and the DPS school day is woefully short) and can already see how it's negatively impacting the teachers ability a)cover material and b)relax a bit.

As for bussing, I do think it's important. I'm not exactly sure how a high school student is less entitled to transportation than an elementary student. There really isn't a difference other than age in the city of Dayton. I would imagine that very few public high school students have cars at their disposal and as it's been pointed out, the new laws prohibit carpooling among students and their friends. Dayton has a large bus pool, IMO, they just don't use it effectively. My own children do not ride the bus. They would have to get on at 6:45am to be at school around 7:30am. Their return trip? A mere 9 mins.
No way. Never gonna happen. LOL

I think he is doing a great job so far! I read art and music was reinstated. I think its much more important than high school busing. When I was in high school anyone who rode the bus was considered a nerd. It was less than 10% of students who actually used busing in high school.
