A Department of Education report states that homeschooling is rising in popularity and gaining appeal for more reasons than previously.  Approximately 1.5 million kids are currently homeschooled the study says.

The numbers didn't seem surprising to me, and given the budget woes nationwide (and locally), I fully anticipate them to increase.  The entire article can be found here:

For those homeschooling, what reasons would you give for your choice?

Re: More Families Homeschooling
We're home schooling because of local test scores. We can't afford private school, and the local schools do not even meet half of the national average. Neither of us feel like sending our children to school for eight hours a day for them to only return with bad habits and attitude problems.

Re: More Families Homeschooling
I think for us it really changes from year to year. When we first started I think it was more because my boys learn differently and I have on son (my oldest) who catches on quickly and likes to keep moving in his learning or he gets board. Then my other son is more of a hands on learner. He has to not only see how things are done but touch them and physically do something. Especially in his math and science. Also when he is a very active boy. In Kindergarten I think he would have been a bit immature. He was (and still is to some extent) an active boy. He is also a very social boy and I was afraid that he wouldn't pay much attention to a teacher when there were so many other kids around him to talk to. He really would try to be the class clown LOL. That is just who he is. He' a smart boy but loves to make people laugh at him LOL.

Now that we have been homeschooling for a while now (this is our fourth year) things have changed some. While my oldest still learns quickly he is now more leveled off and my youngest is more mature this year. Now that we have been doing First Grade with him he has learned to focus more. Still a class clown but able to sit still for longer periods. He is still very much a hands on learner though.

So now we homeschool because it works for us. At least for now. The boys and I(and hubby, he does help out a lot) enjoy it and we learn things together. For us things change year to year. I would love to homeschool them throughout but I am not bound to that. If things change like I didn't think they were getting enough or if they wanted to go to a public school then we would reevaluate and go from there.
