I was shocked to read on the Chicago Tribune Online today that McDonald's has started advertising on children's school report cards. (If you don't believe me, you can read the article by clicking here.)

It's no secret that schools across the country are in need of funding. This isn't the first time I've heard of corporations coming to the rescue -- I remember reading about Coca-Cola's sponsorship of business and economics lesson plans in Naomi Klein's book No Logo. I feel, though, like this latest move from McDonald's is taking the already questionable practice of corporate school sponsorship to a new, unhealthy level.

The McDonald's report card deal rewards kids who have great attendance, behavior or grades with a free Happy Meal. I recognize that McDonald's has made efforts to bring healthier foods into their menus, but, as the article points out, Happy Meals generally don't conjure up images of fruit and low-fat milk. It's cheeseburgers, french fries and milkshakes (or at least it is from my point-of-view).

My children love to get a food award. They feel responsible that an adult does not have to buy it, but they earned it. Children who play sports get all kinds of recogniton (for playing a game well). I think it is important to recognize our children for being academic. It shows that we value learning. There are other fun yet healthy choices.

I would like more info on starting a grass roots campaign, can't we do this nationally. See new group Better nutrition for schools also.

There is a documentary everyone needs to watch on "McDonalds" and other fast food. I am going to look the exact name up. It shows exactly the effect this lifestyle has on us. I love the taste of McDonalds but it is not a good regular choice. One tasty meal and who doesn't want more, lots more.
