Some people think that teachers in charter schools should not be unionized. In practice, the rules vary by state. In California, the teachers at the charter school decide. In Hawaii, charter schools are required to abide by union rules and in Georgia unions aren't allowed. What works best? Is it fair to the other teachers in a school district if the teachers at a charter school are not part of a union?

Re: Teachers' Unions and Charter Schools
This is a very challenging and tricky question. I don't know as much about it as I would like, but I know that teachers at Green Dot Schools (which are charter schools) have worked with the CMO to set up a very small teacher's union. The word on the street is that the union is functioning very harmoniously with the CMO and that together they are working toward the right goals. I'd like to study cases like this before weighing in. Does anyone else know about innovative union strategies that charters have used?
