At my school they have ELAC (English Language Advisory Committee) but not a GAC ( Gate Advisory Committee). I learned so much by going to my district Advanced Learner parent meetings, but many parent are not able to attend. I have spoken to some parents of gifted and talented students at  my childrens school and some do not know how to better help and understand their child, who may be struggling.

Any insite will be greatly appreciated.

Here are some websites:

Well, the district provides the school with a nominal amount (LAUSD is $25 this year) per child, so it makes sense to meet and figure out what that money will provide. Whether it's for teacher in-service training, or to provide some type of program, you should be discussing what you'd like to see done with the gifted program at your school. At the very least, someone (prinicipal or senior teacher) should meet with you and discuss what they do for the gifted kids to differentiate.

No they do not have any type of meeting at the school, and their are many children who are gifted. I am part of the SSC and suggested getting Gate parents together, now I am the person in charge of doing so, but clueless to how to start. The principal really doesn't know much about Gate students, just that they are identified.

Hi Mom4University, and welcome to GreatSchools Parent Community.

Does your school host evening meetings for parents of gifted kids? My district expects schools to host two meetings a year, and in some schools they host monthly meetings.

You might offer to help encourage parents to attend, and then suggest creating an informal committee and go from there.

I know my daughter's school has a pretty large gifted population and they don't have a formal committee. Yet, some parents are used as resources for things like magnets and getting testing and navigating our very large bureaucratic district.

I'd be interested in hearing what others have to say.
