Anyone know what the best school is for gifted kids in the Huntington, WV area?

We are relocating to that area and I have no idea where to begin looking for a house, as the school that my son will go to is VERY important to me. It determines where we live. My son is in the 7th grade, a member of MENSA and is a gifted student.

Can someone tell me where I should begin looking? I am looking for either a public or a charter school.

Thanks so much!! :-)

WV does not have Charter schools so you are out of luck for that. If your son is in 7th grade, then you will want him to go to Barboursville middle school. I would also look into getting him involved in the Duke online program for 7th graders

The best elementary school would be in Barboursville. A suburb of Huntington. They have an inhouse gifted teacher for the students.

I live in Los Angeles (the opposite of WV!!) but I have kin in WV and lived there for a short time as a child.

offering the "extras" is hard and it would be nice if the school could meet our kids needs, so I understand why parents send kids to privet schools (or in my community lie about were they live so their kids can go to "the good school"), but public local schools have great benefits the most important- in my book- is teaching our kids that they can get along with anyone- that everyone is the same(my daughter is one of the few white kids at her current school).
good luck
P.S. WV has a great 4-H program if you are looking for out of school enrichment program.

Thank you! Do you live in West Virginia? My son is in a similar situation right now where we live in Tennessee. His school often does not meet state standards, but he is happy with his straight A's. I just feel that we are not in the right area to do the "extras" at home. Right now, we live in a farming community and we will be moving to an area that does not offer a lot more than what we have now...but from what I hear, there will be slightly more available to us in Huntington, WV. Oh, the joy's of working for the railroad! They love to move us into very rural towns. My son thrives in an urban atmosphere.

if your son loves going to school why not send him to school were he can make friends and do the Jr. High thing and you offer enrichment for him when he is at home.
my daughter is gifted as well, the school she goes to has less then great test scores. our daughter is happy, well adjusted and scoring 100% on all state test scores. the husband and i do the extras at home.
good luck and enjoy (WV is wonderful country)

I really hope so! We don;t really have a choice because of my husband's job. But, if I have to homeschool him, I will. My degree is in education anyways...so I know that I could do it...I just know he will be upset because he is a social kid. He loves "going" to school.

Good luck finding a program for your child. We decided against moving to Huntington, WV a few years ago because we were unable to find a viable option for him. Things might have changed in the last few years.
