My daughter is entering 5th grade next year and has been invited to join an "accelerated" GATE combo class of 4th and 5th graders, all of whom are in the GATE program. Just wondering what the pros and cons are to this. She has an excellent teacher and would have the same teacher next year.

Re: 4th/5th combo GATE class
The pros: You already are familiar with the teacher and she's familiar with your daughter. There won't be that "getting to know you" period where the teacher will have to see what your daughter is capable of. Your daughter will be among other gifted children in an accelerated program.

Cons: Any split class is a challenge. All gifted kids aren't necessarily gifted in the same way, so now not only is she dealing with gifted kids from one grade level, but she'll have two different state standards to meet. I'd make sure I knew the course description of "accelerated" to make sure they're going deeper with the material and not just going faster.

If you have any concerns, just ask to speak with the teacher and see what she has to say. She should be able to allay your concerns.
