I am new at  parenting but I have an 4 yr old (almost 5)  who is in Pre-K and, her teacher continue to tell me that she is advance and she is pushing her harder than the other kids because she dont want her to fall behind. I know that she advance but there are some things that she haven't learned yet. So my question is how do you know when your child is gifted and when to get them tested?

Re: How do you know if your child is gifted?
I don't understand pushing a child who is advanced so they 'dont fall behind'. How can she fall behind if she's advanced? I'd want the teacher to explain that as it doesn't quite make sense to me.
Gifted refers more to the way someone learns and how they think - pushing a gifted child isn't the right thing to do and it usually isn't necessary as gifted children are usually very good at picking things up on their own. To determine officially if a child is gifted, certain tests are given to the child and your school district can do that - if they will. It can be done privately too but it's not inexpensive to have the tests done privately.
That your daughter might have some gaps - or that in some ways be advanced and in other ways not advanced - that's not any cause for concern or any reaosn for a teacher to push her. Even the brightest of children learn in fits and starts - they may know every number from 1 to 1000 but forget a letter of the alphabet or vice versa. They're children and nature didn't intend them to know everything all at once.

Re: How do you know if your child is gifted?
no, he justed gave the same report (I mentioned to you) with the numbers done by dr.coe. he says that after he received his behavior plan at school, then he will see the IQ results and the changes of the prior report. by the way i forgot to tell you that finally the school is giving me the meeting to discuss the plan for next Tuesday.. the principal sent the letter with my daughter teacher today (my daughter was invited by her teachers to Dinner do to her Level 6 at FCAT/writting score) For now I am happy and please that finally the school is taking the doctors recommendation and suggestion into consideration.. no matter if he is gifted/indigo or ADHD..I just want the right thing for him and the appropiete education. I won't give up, and for my kids I do Anything..Just looking at his face how confident and happy he is now I AM HAPPY! GOD LISTEN TO MY PRAYERS! thks for your support and will keep u info. :)

Re: How do you know if your child is gifted?
idel, I'm sure your son is bright, but did the doctor actually tell you what your son's IQ was, and give you a written report that summarizes all the testing he did?

I came out so happy! In the way out of the Hospital my son says to the security, bye bye sir, my doctor told me that I was very smart, have a good day Ok.. (the security justed laugh). Re: How do you know if your child is gifted?
idel, just last night I attended an Asperger's parent's support meeting. It is critical to know that no two children are the same, even if they have the same diagnosis. Many Asperger's children do speak clearly and excessively, using extremely "complex" words and they don't all have motor difficulties. Most however, do have social difficulties. I would not look at the other mother's child, and assume that if your son doesn't act like her son, it can't be Asperger's.
I think you are wise to get another professional opinion.

Re: How do you know if your child is gifted?
thk you, 1 of his classmate have asperguer.. As per his mom that is being observing my son says that he has no sign of this syndrome due to the fact that my son speak clearly, talk (to much) give you straight answers with long words and his motor skill are fine. (he is too fast) I truly will have a clear conversation with his neurologist and I might seek more professional advices.
one time his friend mom (the one that Asp) started asking lots of questions - He putted a funny face and responded: Actually I believe that you need to way for my first question answers to keep asking me more questions!.. The lady Freak Out!! and his teachers Crack Down!

Re: How do you know if your child is gifted?
I have a good friend who has referred to the evaluation of young children as "peeling an onion." Often you have to get through many different layers of what is happening with a child. Sometimes, different doctors see things in different ways. I still think you should post in the Asperger's Group and ask some of those parents how their children acted when they were young. You might find a re-evaluation when your son is older gives different results. For now, I would not be at all worried about a child who is only 5 and doesn't read or write...that's typical.

Re: How do you know if your child is gifted?
You are correct!! He was evaluated for Asperguer Syndrome since this Neurologist the same that told me that he was an Indigo Child when he was two believe that it was the case. Miami Children Hospital Dr. Coe-Neurologist/Physiologic evaluated him and the Asperguer Syndrome was NOT, present in him (I wish, with that condition Yes, the school give me services) but with the diagnostic of ADHD I have to fight for it! The first evaluation the doctor observed him while he was interviewing me about my son. He goes: This little guy - It is a Remarkable Smart Boy!, His Brain goes beyond his age..He does have Attention Deficit - The Asperguer Syndrome does not fit on him.. Do you want me to evaluated still for Asperguer? You have to pay private since the insurance does not cover? OK, Yes please I would like the complete evaluation was my responded> he was evaluated the next day ( C A R S ) is the name of the evaluation.. The result the same, Indigo with Attention deficit. doctors are not allow to give this diagnostic so the ADHD WAS GIVEN! his scores was beyond the normal ranges for his age even thought he does not know how to read or write (just his name and numbers) and the answer of little Professor yes,, he see the kids his age as little kid and is the reason he prefer to play alone since his conversation topics are not the same his age range! I have a Dr. appoint. now May 6, once again to clear his diagnostic and tell him his situation at school.

Re: How do you know if your child is gifted?
idel, is your son "infatuated" with the topics you mention, focusing on them to the point where he may not want to do "regular kid things?" Does he have a reputation as "a little professor" and like to talk about those subjects even when other people aren't interested? Have you ever heard of Asperger's? You might want to learn more about it, and repost about your son here: community.greatschools.net/groups/18940

Re: How do you know if your child is gifted?
I know you must be delighted with your daughter's abilities! Most important, right now, is for your daughter to develop a of healthy sense of self. You want her to be curious, to express herself, to enjoy learning, to develop friendships, to enjoy group learning situations, to feel confident when she is away from home, gain Independence, and to follow directions. It is so important to maintain a balanced perspective of the importance of these issues, especially during the early childhood years. Often children become so over loaded with academic demands, so early, that they lose out on the joys of childhood. I share these thoughts with you, and others, as a parent who raised children who are gifted, as well as an educator. Too often, gifted programs are not enrichment, rather they are only additional work, a form of punishment. If children become too overburden with academics they can lose the motivation to learn. Think about, excellence just gives you more work, often at the expense of precious family and social time. You have been provided with a lot of good information regarding the identification of giftedness. Children go to school for a very long time. I guess what I am trying to say is, you have a lot of time before you have to make any decisions. You will never get the opportunity to go back in time with your daughter. Make choices that will support her in feeling secured and loved, and fill the both of you with cherished memories. Seize every moment in enjoying your daughter's childhood. We are children for a very brief period, we are adults for a much longer time. Remember time spent together is the greatest gift!
I wish you all the best!!

Re: How do you know if your child is gifted?
DianaR, I sense that you've already gotten comments from teachers about your child's behaviors, and you're trying to figure out if he/she is really bright and bored, or has an attentional issue, or perhaps is both gifted and has ADHD. My son falls in the later catergory, and kids like that are known as "2e" or "twice exceptional." You can read more about them at community.greatschools.net/groups/16042 Unfortunately, there aren't a lot of child psychologists who have the expertise to distinguish what's happening at such young ages. ADHD is a medical diagnosis: www.help4adhd.org can tell you more. There are different IQ/achievement tests used for children after they turn 6, and most public schools don't offer any gifted programming until children are in 3rd grade, anyway, so I wouldn't rush to test at age 5. In my son's case, because we were considering kindergarten enrollment into a private school for gifted students, the school provided a list of evaluators who were experienced in testing young kids. You might see if there are any gifted schools in your area and ask them for recommendations. (www.nais.org has a list of independent schools)

Re: How do you know if your child is gifted?
Hi. I'd like to recommend that you read some of the earlier conversations that have been posted in this group, because many of those discussions talk about "defining giftedness," such as this one: community.greatschools.net/groups/11537/discussion/147563

Giftedness isn't always present in "academic" ways. In fact, some very bright kids (as measured by IQ testing) don't always get good grades. Some kids are very good "memorizers" and do very well in academic subjects, but other people believe that truly gifted people understand things, and make "connections" without being shown or told. Some children have both abilities, and they really seem to excel.

Especially when children are younger, how much they've been exposed to plays a big role in how bright they appear. (Parents who read to their children, take them for field trips to the zoo and museums, talk to them using "adult" language, etc. are naturally going to have an advantage compared to kids who aren't given those experiences.)

I'm not trying to discourage you or say your child isn't bright, but it really does seem like there's no need to rush. Keep enriching your child's life by giving them opportunities to learn about different topics, and love your child for who they are, not an IQ number.

Re: How do you know if your child is gifted?
How wonderful that your daughter's teacher realizes she is advanced! I believe challenging a child (within reason!) is the single best thing you can do for them. I don't mean your daughter should be forced to do academic exercises to fill her free time. Just don't allow her to get bored if she is advanced and eventually has a teacher who does not push her.

You might want to look into your child's elementary school now. Do they have a gifted program? When does it start? Many do not begin until the third grade, but some begin testing halfway through the school year in kindergarten. Some schools don't have gifted programs at all. If you suspect your daughter is gifted and want her to eventually be able to join a gifted program, it is probably worthwhile to see what the options are now.

Re: How do you know if your child is gifted?
Wait till the age of 7 or 8. An IQ of 130 or over and academic testing that is commensurate with these levels indicate giftedness
