I am torn and really need help calming the storm in my head about where to have my -  just-  6 year old attend 1st grade next year.  He is very much above grade level in reading, writing, math and in some ways.. maturity.  He draws these very intricate mazes.  He draws the map of the USA and can write (spelling correctly) every state in the appropriate places.  He can tell you what states boarder what states.  He knows the capitals.  ... These are just a few of his interests.  He gets very focused when he has an interest in something.  He amazes us every day with something new.

On recommendation, I had him tested for the gifted program last year , but  he didn't qualify.  It was a fill in the bubble type test and i was not allowed to see the results at all.

He is in our local school (brand new school) for kindergarten.  I placed him there last year because I was going through a very rough pregnancy and didn't have the energy to do a proper search.  Now, he has made friends and gotten used to this school.  And, although he doesn't seem enthusiastic about school and doesnt seem to learn much new on a daily basis...he says he doesn't want to leave.  They have tried to accomodate his needs by having him go to first grade for reading.  Otherwise... everything he does in class is just busy work.  Even the 1st grade work isn't that difficult.  And, in the 1st grade class... there are so many students with no aide that the class is very rushed and pressured.   I do think that even though he can do the work.. the pace is scary for him.  I'm worried that he is not showing the enthusiasm for school  and learning that he should/could.

The curriculum focuses on math and reading.  Not much of anything else. They do a rotation of music, library/computers and PE.   I want his education to be more balanced with science, art, music, foreign language, PE... and I want it to be more hands on and cooperative.  But, they must teach everyone the same it seems.

I have now researched schools and the schools that seem more of a fit are a bit of a drive.  I don't want to have to drive him 30 min to his school twice per day.  I know that sounds petty.. but there are many cons to adding that commute to my day.  My family says.. "just put him in afterschool programs".  But, I say... "too much of that and we over-schedule him and he can't be a kid".  So, I'm trying to balance my sons educational needs with our family needs.

Does anyone have advice for me?  Even if he wasn't advanced... I don't like the way the local/public school focuses heavily on reading and math.  It is too robotic and not enough creative thinking.  What am I to do?

Thanks!

Re: I need help with my decision about where to place my, possibly, gifted 6 yr.old
I have been down this road and really wish you the best. My son has done Montessori (until 4th grade), it was a charter and we liked it until the 4th grade teacher who was just a terrible fit, and we felt our child was outgrowing the whole Monessori- sit on the floor- warm and fuzzy environment. Still, I would recommend it for a kindergarten through third grade, but it depends on the Montessori since they are all different in how they interpret Maria Montessori's methods. Don't you just love consistency in the American educational system? Then we did 2 years in public school, the last year in a self contained classroom, which I could write reams about but it doesn't much matter since funding has pretty much been axed and we applied months ago to a charter school. I am pretty ambivalent about the whole gifted thing and the cottage industry surrounding it, and the pathologizing that goes along with having a child that is "different". At this point, I have stopped reading the piles of books, papers and websites that all have served to do nothing more than raise our expectations as parents, only to be disappointed by the educational system that purports to "understand". We have had enough experience both good and bad to feel confident, however, in moving forward, which at this point does not include "gifted education". You may come to a different conclusion than we did, and your experiences, where you live and what's offered, may lead you down a different path. But, remember that you know your child better than anyone else. Do not be cajoled or prodded into making a decision you are not sure or comfortable with. Look very hard at what is offered to you. Ask ANY AND ALL questions, and make sure you get answers. Transparency about your child and your expectations is vital. I would not depend on the school to do intelligence testing, you need to go to a psychologist who will review the results with you and offer assistance and guidance. That is the best decision we ever made. If you want to send me a private e-mail, I will be happy to elaborate more specifically on things that we experienced as well as the conclusion I have come to regarding gifted ed.

I am just starting this road, moving into elementary this coming fall. I have spent too much time crying because we do not live close to any gifted schools nor can we truly afford paying the 20-22k a year.

The standard private schools in the area don't want my son because, being gifted, he comes with his own set of quirks. He needs transition time, has anxiety in part due to a perfectionist personality.

We are in the San Jose area of California. Any suggestions?? Montessori is something I would look into but worry that it's not enough structure and group time. Thoughts?

While my first thought was, "yeah-they're all gifted at 6...," being able to correctly spell and locate all 50 states is pretty impressive. Thankfully your mates only 6 and won't be after my job for a while. Sooo-while I study my states for the day he enters the job market maybe you can tell me why you would let your kid take a test that you weren't allowed to see the results of? Kinda like buying a dinner you aren't allowed to eat. You are the parent-there is NOTHING that should ever be kept from you-as much as we might like it to be otherwise later on.
Most kids who are "advanced" tend to become average about the time those who are slow also meet the middle mark. It's just one of those things. If he has friends and is secure-why move him? If you want to challenge him-do it at home or with tutors with assistance from school. Work with his comfort level-that's where he will be most likely to strive.

thank you for your info. I will request to see his test. I"m thinking of testing him again. Your question about carpooling.. well.... that is a posibility. However, I'm trying to get back to work and I'm not sure how that will all fit in. Depending on where I work and where he goes to school.. all plays a part on transportation. Thanks again for everyone's input... every little bit helps.
