My son goes to private Montessori school, and he is one of top in his classroom.  Since his school is Montessori, it's too strict to him.  So I'm considering him to take a test for gifted program in Bellevue, WA, but I'm afraid gifted program make students study too much or my son's feeling is hurt if he falls behind among the gifted classmates.  I don't want him to be stressed in school.  If someone has experience with gifted program, please give me an advice.

No.

It's a relief. Finally, you can relax and be yourself because the others around you do not think of you as a smart a**. When you correct misinformation in another student they understand that it's about information and not attacking them. Kids who are not with their gifted classmates often feel the correction is a slight or that they are being disrepected.

The ability to think, for gifted children, feels like respect - - -finally.

it hasn't been stressful for me or my son.i taught him sense of responsiblity, i do not teach him his homeworks or i do not teach him about his school work.i let him be.if he wants to watch TV after school or do computer works after school, i let him do that for as long as he does his homework and school work, and i got very good results.his lowest grade was 95, and i think it was not stressful for both of us.School can only be stressful for kids and parents if we are too strict with them, like how some parents do, after school, do homework and etc...but to me, and for my kid, we use a different approach towards school work.i only help him out when there is really a great need for it.i do not answer his homework nor his school work.

Another way to look at this is, does not being challenged enough in his present situation stress him out? My son also attended a Montessori and the discipline issues were also a problem. He was not working up to his potential and it was actually a Montessori teacher who suggested we find him a self contained gifted program. For 5 years I always asked the Montessori teachers the same question at the end of the year.."is this working?" Finally, his 3rd grade teacher told us about gifted programs, even though it eventually resulted in him leaving the Montessori. If your son's teacher is honest and has his best interests at heart, that teacher should be able to answer your question for you.

The gifted programs my son has been in are a lot like to Montessori instruction he had. They work together, but at their own pace on defined projects.

He always enjoys going into the classes as they make him think in his "normal" way, which is outside the box. These classes also have provided much-needed challenges that the regular classes were not able to provide. He did have to keep up with his regular classwork and, if needed it was turned into homework.

Have your child tested, ask about the program, then, see if you can test him out in the gifted class. If he doesn't enjoy it, it's too stressful, etc. then he can be taken out.

Schedule a date for your son to take a test. Meet with your child's teacher or gifted program director. Ask for their program background and the program expectations from students. Let him or her know your concern and your son's fear. Talk with other parents and children in the program.

My child's asserts that their gifted program is fun, interesting, and informative. The program is created for the children to be creative in the areas of science and technology, geography, world history including ancient writing and philosophy, economic (maths), and leadership. My daughter, 8 years old reports that she has to think and wonder a lot about each topic in the class. Guess who is the US Secretary of State or the Secretary-General of the United nations! The current price of the barrel of oil! What is Atoms? My daughter looks forward anytime for this weekly class. She enjoys and loves every thing about the gifted program.
