I know I've read much of what this article is detailing on the boards here, but not necessarily on one article from one source.

I agree with the poster below and especially wish to emphasize the benefit of informed and active ADVOCATING parents.Be prepared to serve as your child's advocate. Policies definitely do not place the gifted near the top of a school's priority list.

Re: LA Times Article: "Are Gifted Students Getting Left Out?"
They are not only getting left out, but there is resentment by teachers and administators over the very identification of children as gifted. I would say there are a lot of really entrenched mentalities in the schools (and we've done both charter/Montessori and public), but there are also great teachers and administrators who are well educated about giftedness and are making big changes. Parent groups are probably one of the most powerful tools for change. There are lots of them in my city and they DO make a difference.

Readers of this post may also want to google Thomas eordham Foundation. Then click on the study, "High
Achievers in an Era of NCLB". This study. along with A Nation Deceived; How Schools Hold Back America's Best Students serve as evidence that the gifted are the ugly stepchild of American education.

The link works and the article is still available, it's just that the LA Times, like the NY Times requires one to be registered.

In essence, the article points out that gifted students, most especially the 2E population, are the least-identified and under-served population of students. It goes further by noting that there are teachers and administrators don't even like identifying this group.

I'm with Magnet -- we've been lucky. One of the reasons my family doesn't live in Altadena (where my husband was born & raised) is because of the low-quality school district.
