Hello Everyone, my daughter just turned 3 and the words that she knows she says very clearly and she's attempting at sentences. Her eagerness to say those sentences makes her jumble her words and I was wondering if that was the norm for 3 year olds. I know she shouldn't be quoting Shakespeare or anything, and I'm just curious.

Re: Language skills at age 3
my 3 yr old son jumbles his words as well. He does say sentences but it consists of "Momma my Bruder said you can no have this" But hes really saying "momma brother said I can't have this?" or he says things like "TV show that good" meaning "That TV show is good" I don't see anything wrong with it. I just make sure I correct him by saying "do you mean "that TV show is good?" and the next time he see's a good show he will say "that TV show good momma?" Kids do learn at their own pace. I started practicing at about 9 months with games and just plain talking straight to him. My 16 month old a little bit slower with talking. So I think it depends on the child. One thing the doctor always told me to look for is if after practicing and practicing if he still doesn't understand it. Or if his words sounded slurred. Be sure to ask your child's doctor about any concerns you might have. He/She might have more information on what to look for and how to help your child progress.

Some toys and games could help language skill development. Specifically, you could give her some electronic toys or read picture books or let her play music toys. Take a look at the list on the link: www.play4kid.com/age/1571/sd/1588/d/Bigger+Kids+-+3-5+Years+Old/Language+Skill

Kids all learn at their own pace so I wouldn't compare your daughter to other 3 year olds. One thing you can do to help her is to read to her. This will build her vocabulary, teach her about sentence structure, and entertain her. Children who learn to love reading when they are young seem to excel as they grow. After all, reading is the base of most learning (at least textbook learning).

Re: Language skills at age 3
Could you give us an example of how she jumbles her words?

It's pretty common for three year olds to mix up their words. I've heard little kids say things like, "Her wants" instead of "She wants."

Here are some basic developmental milestones for language development that I'm copying from an article in the GreatSchools Library:

Language and Thinking Development

* understands most of what is said and 75 percent of speech is understandable
* speaks in complete sentences of three to five words
* matches pictures to objects
* learns by doing and through the senses
* understands concepts of "now," "soon," and "later"
* begins to recognize cause-and-effect relationships

You can read the whole article here: www.greatschools.net/cgi-bin/showarticle/2324

Hope this helps!!
