Hello GreatSchools Community!

Introductions are an important way to build a strong community.  This group provides a space for us all to say a little something about ourselves so we don't become just another face in the crowd.  Going first is always hard so I'll start!

I'm a working mother mother of one baby girl.  My daughter is Evelyn Rose, she just turned one this November.  My husband and I threw a big party for her and, truthfully, us.  We had a whole spread of comfort food including fried chicken and homemade macaroni and cheese, as well as a beautiful cake made by my sister, the amazingly talented pastry chef.

I believe that online parenting groups are an invaluable resource and I have received helpful and comforting advice from being a participant.  That is why I am extremely excited to be a part of the GreatSchools Community.

I grew up in California with my six brothers and sisters but spent two and a half wonderful years living in Brooklyn, NY.  When the winter hit and I had a newborn baby, no car, and no family nearby the answer became very clear: move back to California.  So, here I am.

What about you?

Re: Let's Introduce Ourselves
I don't have any children yet, but issues of education and parenting are still very important to me. How we raise and educate our children shapes the world, and it involves all of us!

I grew up in Louisiana. My mother is an educator there, one of the many dedicated people battling the problems that state faces. I have also lived in Kansas, Connecticut, New York City, Chicago, San Francisco and Australia. I now hail from Kentucky, a beautiful place rich in history. I have siblings spread across the country and a niece and nephew (and another on the way!) to whom I am a very devoted aunt.

Re: Let's Introduce Ourselves
I work for GreatSchools - on the product and marketing side. I was a for-profit internet entrepreneur for several years before joining GreatSchools, and was a public junior high school teacher in Japan for two years prior to that. I don't have kids, but I'm passionate (and have a lot of opinions) about parenting, education and K-12 school reform, which I'm sure will be put into check if I do have kids someday : ). I've lived abroad in the UK (for school), Japan (for work) and have traveled quite a bit worldwide. I've also lived on the East Coast (in Manhattan) and Chicago. My primary interests outside of work include documentary filmmaking, volunteer work as a board and committee member for a few nonprofits, cooking, reading, hiking, kayaking and gardening. I'm excited about becoming part of the GreatSchools community and meeting others with an interest in education - particularly education policy issues.

Re: Let's Introduce Ourselves
I'm a proud product of the San Francisco Unified School District public school system! In fact, I recently met the new principal of my elementary school at a fundraiser and look forward to working with her as a volunteer. My mother was a preschool teacher for 20 years at a small, private school. As a teen, I volunteered there myself as well as working for a non-profit engaged in arts education that made site visits to public schools. Now I'm consulting with GreatSchools--exciting!
I am not a parent but I have many children in my life, and I strongly believe education is a community concern.

Hi all - I'm Julia - not a parent but I definitely remember what its like to be a student! I've always worked in organizations that are trying to change the educational system, so I so excited to have a forum where people interested in that topic, or parents trying to make change at their schools can talk about these issues! I'd love to chat with folks about school choice, education reform, and (since I'm always planning ahead!) how you raise kids who love learning!

I am also a GreatSchools staff member - I work on the product team on a wide variety of projects.

Hi everyone- My name is Jax. I am a Stay at home mom to 3 children. Two boys, 7 and 5 and a girl who is 2. My childrens education is very important. My boys are both ahead of the curve in school expecially my 7 year old. He is in Second grade and reading somewhere in the 4th grade reading level. He is alo very social, popular and very well known though out the school. I am a mom who is trying to keep up w/ him and trying to do what is right for his education. He is in a school that is really tying hard to support the no child left behind system and doing a wonderful job at it. So there is a huge gap between the learning levels in his class. I am tring hard to work w/ the teachers so to help w/ what I can so he dose not idol and get bored in school. I have no experience w/ any of this.. wich is why I am here... I was, by second grade struggling in school. I did not like it and I had a lot of at home problems So this experience in new to me. I am here to meet others that can help me juggle all of this including my 2 y/o and middle child so they do not get lost in the shuffle. Parenting is hard but I think w/ the support of other parents and teachers in a community I can do this and raise good children. As they say it takes a a village to raise a child. Hope to get to know some of you :P

Hello! I am a mom to 3 boys, ages 20, 11, and 6. I am a grandma to 9 month old Addison. My boys are in 1st and 5th grade this year. I think being part of a parenting community is awesome. Other parents may have a solution to a problem that I may not think of!! I live in Wisconsin and work part time at night. It's very important for me to be here for my kids! The cost of childcare would eat up most of a fulltime job. I did in home daycare up until a year ago, then the little ones started school! I can't wait to get to know you all!

Hi. My name is Gloria. I have one child, my daughter who's 10 yrs old and happily married to hubby for coming up on 19 yrs. I'm the serious one - he's the funny, fun one (just ask our daughter). Our daughter's in private school in S.FL. She's always been in private, because I'm none too pleased with the public school system here - & the good schools (magnet, charter) are by lottery - & based on socio-economics. We 3 would love to relocate to Connecticut - then we'd definitely have her in public school there; they're better than pricey private here. Academics are a priority for me but the emphasis for my girl is the social - she's like my younger Sis that way. Not that she's a social butterfly - she's actually quite shy but the social stuff really matters to her, esp. now that she's in the Tween yrs. I was a bookworm at school, a tomboy after school so it's been really exciting raising my girlie girl. I'm so excited about GreatSchools community & looking forward to the years ahead.

Hello I'm Shannon, I have 3 boys ages 8, 9, and 10. They are all in public school in second, fouth, and fifth grade. I am excited to be a part of this group. I am looking forward to new ideas on how to help my boys over come spelling, reading comprehension and math issues.

We live in California about an hour away from San Francisco. My husband and I both work full time during the day. At times it makes it difficult to help out with the school as much as we would like.

I hope to learn and share great ideas with everyone!

Hi. I'm Cindy. I have a daughter, age 6 in first grade and a son, age 4 in preschool. I work part time (3 days a week). My husband is a police officer and works the afternoon turn. So a lot of times it is just me and the kids. However it works for us right now.
I am looking forward to contributing and gaining insight to a variety of topics.

Hi: I'm Olivia and a mother of 2 children ages 4 and 7. We live in San Francisco and have gone through that horrid kindergarten process with my son. We are so thankful that siblings are given priority at his current school so we don't have to do it all over again. We chose a private school that we just love. But I'm interested to hear what other public schools are working for parents.

Hi,
I am the mother of two boys, ages 8 & 10. My husband and I both work full time outside of the house, and his parents live with us as well, so ours is a busy household! We will be transitioning our boys from private to public school next year so I will be looking for some advice on that process. This is my first attempt at an online community- we'll see how it goes!

Re: Let's Introduce Ourselves
I went though this transition mid school year last year with my boys. It was difficult at first but over all went very well. A few things I could suggest would be to have the boys go visit the new school and ask the principal, teachers, and other students questions. When you drive by the area the school is at mention that hey there's your new school. Best of all keep the new school talk positive.
Good luck!

Re: Let's Introduce Ourselves
Hi, I am a transfer from SchwabLearning messageboard with the screen name of Grandmabrk. I am involved with the third generation of kids with Specific Learning Disabilities. The last one on an IEP that hasn't already made it to college is in middle school using Kurzweil 3000 on a laptop in regular education classes because his reading fluency is more than five years below grade level; but his listening comprehension is above grade level. He also has dysgraphia and used CoWriter and WriteOutLoud along with MathPad and MathPad Plus Fractions and Decimals in elementary school. My goal is to live long enough to see the last grandchild graduate from college and my dream is for all public school systems to implement Universal Design for Learning.

I, unknowingly, started on the Special Education journey in high school during the 1950s when I met an undiagnosed dyslexic "bad boy" and fell in love with him. He helped me with my accounting homework and I helped him with anything that wasn't number related. Flash forward, daughters entered school and did extremely well. Son entered school and fell through the cracks starting in first grade. Schools decided there was such a thing as smart kids with learning difficulties and I finally got him an LD diagnosis in 6th grade. Flash forward, our grandchildren started school. Girls did extremely well, every boy diagnosed with LD.

It continues to be an interesting journey. The internet has made the confusing world of juggling teachers, counselors, psych/ed evaluators, doctors, psychiatrists, RTI, IEPs, transition meetings, special education laws, and parents of so-called normal kids that have no clue of the day-to-day stresses that our kids handle with grace bearable.

Hello everyone. My name is Debbie and I am a mom to one son, age 10 1/2 (very important...that 1/2 year, you know). Spencer was diagnosed autistic at age three and I was thrilled to see the groups' page includes one for parents/care givers of high-functioning autistic kids. Most of Spencer's issues are social and the older he gets, the worse the struggle. I hope to connect with parents who have or are experiencing these issues.
I love our school and district in Kalkaska, Michigan. I graduated from here and am pleased that I am able to have my son here. I believe that our I.S.D. is one of the best for Aspie/AI, etc kids. The support is incredible.
I am a full-time volunteer in our lower elem. school, working in the library Monday through Friday. I wear many hats within our Parent Teacher Organization, including being secretary and the coordinator for our Cash for Trash and Three for Me programs.
I am broadening my horizons, becoming more involved in district issues. I've coordinated our district-wide back-to-school bash for its first two years and sit on our Public Relations Team.
I am interested to learn more about other schools, especially where parent involvement is concerned.

Hi, I'm mom to 15 and 14 yr old girls, one of which is diagnosed with AD/HD - inn & Generalized Anxiety disorder and currently attends a virtual high school, also to an 11 yr old son who is 2e - twice exceptional, he is classified as both gifted and talented and has AD/HD/ dysgraphia/ sensory and motor planning issues.

In addition to the challenges of being a mom to 3 very diverse kids I am also a family team coach for the wraparound process in a community based behavioral/mental health clinic.

I live in a rural area of Arizona and am all too familar with the educational challenges in rural areas without extensive resources or educational options.

Hi, I'm mom to two daughters, ages 25 and 28. They both went to public school in California and I was very involved with school activities when they were young. I served on the PTA, school site council, local school foundation, and then the local school board for 8 years. I've stayed interested and involved in public education issues long after my daughters were out of the system, and I have written lots of content for GreatSchools on a variety of education issues. My daughters are both "launched" now and I am mighty proud of them. The younger one is in her first year of medical school and the older one has a master's in developmental psychology and does social policy and education research. I am very excited to be part of this community, to keep up with the latest issues in raising kids and ensuring every child's education success.

Hi. My name is Janelle. I am a mother of a 9 year old soon to be 10 in April. For the most part, I have been a single parent for most of her life. I live in the San Francisco Bay Area and love it except for the price of living here. I work 4-5 days a week and start work after I take my daughter to school in the morning. On the days that I am not working and it is a school day, I volunteer my time in the class room or as yard duty. I also help in the office writing up late passes to all the tardy children.

I am also and active member on our PTA. I have lived in the bay area all my life and hope to have my daughter do the same. I am here for any questions that you may need.

Re: Let's Introduce Ourselves
Hi, my name is Freda and I am a deaf mom of 3 boys. Justin (23), Adam and Adrian (identical twins age 10). I was raised in the military world moving about every two years. I attended public schools all my life and was able to finally choose where I wanted to settle down. I chose Denver, Colorado because I really enjoy all of the four seasons. I worked for many years as an executive/consultant for a Center for Independent Living (persons with disabilities) and was advised to stop working during my pregnacy with my twin boys. When I found out my boy's were born with Semantic Pragmatic Disorder as well as Sensory Integration Disorders, I was fortunate to be able to make the choice of staying home to raise Adam and Adrian. My oldest son was extremely active in the community for youth programs while I was able to focus on advocating for parents and children with challenges in all areas (I'm still learning too). My oldest son is now a security officer and a bouncer (part time) until he chooses what to do with the rest of his life. I developed an anxiety disorder a little while back due to some tramatic experiences, so I now work mostly from home, writing grants, doing fundraisers and assisting my children's school in whatever way I can. I have extensive knowledge with IEP's, accommodations and modifications and offer advice wherever it may be needed. My mother just moved here from AZ (after five years of convincing). She has bi-polar and I can now check on her from time to time and take care of her like she took care of me for so long. I am also getting married (after 20 years of being single) next year August, so I'm planning a wedding, what fun! It's been challenging to come up with a hearing/deaf themed wedding, but I think my creativity just kicked in about a month ago. I am here to offer my insight to what I know to all communities here and to learn new strategies in raising children with multiple challenges. I am an excellent resource person for Denver Public Schools as well. Glad to be here!

Re: Let's Introduce Ourselves
I'm Laurel and I live in a suburb of San Francisco, married, working full time and raising an almost-12-old-boy and a 9-1/2 year old girl. They both go to public schools, "great schools" in fact, but I am concerned about how additional budget cuts on the horizon for California schools will affect the quality of the education they receive and which programs will be the next to go. We relocated here last year from a neighboring community and are much happier with the schools in this district, but have considered how much better off our kids would be in another state's school system. Again, I struggle with the issues of relocating and the effect THAT would have on the kids. SO, I thought a forum like this might be helpful, connecting with parents who have relocated and the issues they have encountered, and also to hear what parents of children in California schools are facing in their districts, not to mention how working class parents are saving for a college education in one of the most expensive places on earth! I'm happy to meet you all and hope we can help each other out.

Re: Let's Introduce Ourselves
I'm the mom of two children: daughter 13 a "typcial learner" and son 10 with dyslexia and attention difficulties. I live with my kids, husband of 24 years, dog, cat in Massachusetts and we are huge Red Sox and Patriots fans. The Celtics aren't too bad either!

I'm mostly a stay at home mom, but I facilitate management skills and leadership workshops at a community college and local businesses. I also deliver special ed workshops for my state's PTI and do some parent advocacy work for them. I am passionate about making sure people have the skills and knowledge to be effective advocates for their children and employees.

To round out my schedule, I'm a trustee at my son's private LD school, the Parent's Association co-chair, on the Site Council at the public middle school and very active in my church. I keep threatening to cut back and get more "paid" work, but I enjoy the social aspect of being involved and feel it is important to pay forward my own good fortune.

What do I like to do? I love spending time with friends and family - watching kids' sports, sharing a meal, shopping, walking on the beach, skiing. Everything is more fun if shared with a friend!

I hope my kids grow up to be happy, self sufficient adults that can give back, enjoy what they do, make connections with others and have a balanced life. I hope I live a long life to watch them blossom and share in their lives.

Re: Let's Introduce Ourselves
Hello! I'm the mother of one child, a fourteen-year-old boy, whom I adopted from foster care six years ago. He has learning differences and has been dxed with ADD-Inattentive, a Disorder of Written Expression, Dyslexia (although, this dx is debated, by the private evaluators, who have evaluated him), and a Reading Fluency Disorder. He has an IEP for a Disorder of Written Expression, and he is in all general education classes, doing very well. He loves hanging out with his friends, computers, video games, animals (he's getting his first dog next weekend--we already have three dogs, but this one will be "his" to train and show), anything Japanese, and singing bass in the school choir. He's a great kid, though he's a teenager and is developing, oh, just a bit, of that lovely teenage attitude :).

I'm a "retired" teacher, and I currently work as a counselor, counseling survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. I have many personal interests, including writing (I'm published), photography, cooking, and, my newest interests, learning to play the mandolin and the guitar. My husband has a Ph.D. in music and is a professional musician (upright bass) and a music teacher. We have three (soon to be four) dogs and two horses, also. We used to horseback ride quite a bit, but we've stopped, and I can't tell you why. One of my new year's resolutions is to start riding, again! Finally, we love to travel. We've just returned from Canada (where we are considering buying a second home), and I spent much of my day yesterday planning our summer trip to Japan.

I am the mother of two girls, 7 and 11. I worked at Microsoft as a programming writer til December 2007. I am now taking some time off to provide more support to my family as we adjust to the whole "Middle School" thing. My husband works at Boeing and is a very supportive father.

I am involved at my daughters' schools, in a supportive manner. I volunteer in both schools' libraries. I help the teachers with tasks that support, such as copying. I enjoy supporting the "Powerful Writers" program.

In the elementary school, I set up the Yahoo Group email list and created the school WIKI site. I am currently the elementary school PTSA VP, but focus my time on activities that help raise the educational bar at school and provide a means of support for the parents.

Being involved at the middle school level is a new learning experience for me. I am still learning how to be supportive in the middle school environment.

I am originally from Philadelphia, PA. I am a married mother of 3 girls (14 yo stepdaughter who does not live with us, a 2 yo- will be 3 on Feb. 15th - and a 9 month old). I am currently a stay-at-home-mom but was working as a personal trainer before having my oldest daughter. My husband works very hard (also a personal trainer) for our family.

I am highly interested in my girls recieving a great education. My daughter will be starting preschool very soon and I am trying my best to find out which schools are best in our area. I fortunately grew up in Philadelphia when the educational system was highly regarded and was able to attended top rated schools and recieve a good education. I want the same for my girls. Nothing less. I plan on being very involved in school activities and PTAs.

I hope to make connections with other parents and obtain/give advice on how we can all help our children grow and prosper to be strong, educated, and open-minded individuals

I am originally from Carleton, Michigan. I am a proud mom of 1 son Matthew and he will be turning 5 this April. I work full-time in Ann Arbor for a company called "All Media Guide" which is a data content provider of music, games, video books. My husband Kevin is employed at UofM Ross Business School of Technology. Is also a wonderful dad.

Our son Matthew will be starting Kindergarten in the Fall of 08' and I can't believe it's right around the corner. A part of me feels excitement and the other part of me feels nervous. I'm sure all parents have mixed emotions about their child beginning Kindergarten.

Both my husband Kevin and I plan to be involved in our son's educational needs.

Are their any parents that have children starting Kindergarten this Fall in the Lakeland, Michigan schools? What advice can you give me about the Pinckney school district and the teachers. We moved into the Pinckney, Michigan area about five years ago. We just love the area.

I also hope to make connections with other parents in the community as the school year approaches.

Take care,

Hi!

My name is Michelle. I am the mom of 8 year old triplets. They are currently in second grade. I work full time outside the home, so balance is a big issue for me.

Some of the concerns I am dealing with in school include too much homework, Learning Delays and Struggling in School. Our public school is also piloting school uniforms this year and I'm not sure I'm in support of required uniforms.

I started a Multiples Group on the board, so if anyone out there has twins, triplets or more; or you are interested in education needs for two or more children in the same grade. I encourage you to join my group!

Hello. My name is Anita. I am a single mother to a 4 year old boy. He should be going to kindergarten, but I am still thinking about it, as to whether or not he is ready, what school he will attend and so on. My son is a happy child, Ithink. He has a lot of energy and life. He loves books, animals, and family. He likes life and doesn't seem to know right now what is going on in it. Which is why I love to work with children.
I am the second oldest of nine children ranging in age from 27 to 7. I am an aunt to a 7 year old and a 2 1/2 month old. I work with children (ages 18 months to 5 years of age) in an excellent child care center. Where I am a full-time substitute teacher. I love children. My son also attends the center where I work.
I am looking forward to talking to adults about issues that I have or don't want to have. Oh yeah, I am also a full time student seeking my BA in special education.

Hi. My name is Mary Ann Johnston. I currently live in Alabama, grew up in Texas, and lived in Arkansas for a while. I'm married with a 13 yr old daughter, Amanda, and a 12 year old daughter, Tiffany. They both go to middle school. The like school, but aren't thrilled about the one they currently attend.

They both love to learn. Amanda..Mandy..loves anything about science and animals and wants to be a Zoologist when she grows up. She's even decided the university she wants to go to. Steve Irwin is her hero and she was just devestated when he died.

Tiffany loves pretty much everthing..except math. She's very good at math, just doesn't like it much. Her favorite thing is talking and is pretty much the only thing she ever gets into trouble for at school. She hasn't decided what she wants to be, but knows she doesn't want to give birth...said it sounds like it hurts too much. I laughed pretty hard at that.

Both of the girls are gifted. Mandy was reading Harry Potter books in the 3rd grade and has even started to read my Stephen King books. Tiffany is one of those children everything just comes to naturally. She doesn't ever study but is always on the honor roll...you know, the type of kid we were all jealous of growing up.

But most importantly, they just love life. They like to play outdooors, read, listen to music, play video games with me and their dad, and give each other a hard time. I couldn't ask for better daughters, and I really enjoy the close relationship I share with each of them.

Re: Let's Introduce Ourselves
Hello, all!

My name is Stacey Hopkins and I'm a new member to the community. I've gotta say, I'm lovin' this place and I think I'll be popping in quite frequently!

I'm a mother of four girls and one boy, the girls range from 29 to 8 and my son is 14. My youngest is a student at my local elementary school, I have a daughter who is a scholar with a KIPP (Knowledge Is Power Program) charter school here in the Atlanta area and my son will be attending a charter high school in Alpharetta, Georgia (TEACH) this fall. He graduated from KIPP South Fulton Academy in May 2008. I'm also the proud grandparent of a granddaughter, age 5, and a grandson, age 2 with another grandson due in July 2008.

I'm currently residing in the South Fulton area of Atlanta, and have been a resident of Georgia for 21 years. I was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York and I will have been married for 25 years this October.

Right now, I'm an independent contractor in the legal field after spending about 15 years as a legal secretary concentrating on real estate law and mortgage lending. I decided a few years ago that the rat race could use one less rat, so I decided to concentrate on home and family more.

I'm enjoying the level of conversation to be found here and the resouces available. I'm looking forward to meeting other parents who are concerned about their children's education and the issues that surround them.

If you'd like to know more about me, please check out my profile! I'm sure we have more in common than you think!

Re: Let's Introduce Ourselves
My name is Orla I am 38 and married for eight years. I have 1 stepson (Tyler 14) and 1 son (Logan 5). But I consider them both my boys. Tyler lives with his Mom and step dad and his two half siblings (Matthew 4 and Lindsey 6 ) in Dos Veintos, CA. Logan, Cary and I live in Saugus. I have had the unfortunate experience of having to deal with DCFS for the past year due to false allegations against us that led to Logan being removed and placed with my brothers family. After countless dollars spent on legal fees and many hours of parenting classes and therapy I am happy to report that Logan should be coming home for good June 4th, 2008. For any other parents who may be experiencing similar problems I empathize. I can tell you that all my previous education (psychology/counseling) and my past employment (I was a nanny for over 8 years and worked as the QC coordinator for a leading educational toy company for 2 1/2 years) did not impress DCFS. But at the end of the day it was about my child and I would (and did) jump through hoops to regain custody.
I just finished the last of my courses to become an addiction counselor and I currently work as a Supervisor for the worlds finest coffee retailer.
Logan is very smart and eager to start Kindergarten in the Fall. Tyler is very athletic and a typical teenager.
We ski in Mammoth in the Winter and frolic on Balboa Island, Newport Beach, CA. in the summer.
I was raised in California and attended private school for 12 years (as did my 4 brothers and sisters). Most of my relatives still live in Ireland (my parents were both born in Dublin) so I have spent a lot of time in both Dublin and Galway. I am very intouch with my heritage and believe it is important to pass it along to my kids. I think faith and worship (of just about any creed) is an important part of raising a child. I also think that children should (when they are mature enough) be allowed to choose their own form of worship. Without faith there is no hope without hope.....at times life is unbearable.
I really have enjoyed all the discussions on this site so far and I have started referring my friends. Thanks.

Hi Orla!

You're right up the way from me, because we're in San Fernando. I didn't realize Dos Vientos was trying to separate itself from the rest of Thousand Oaks. I grew up in TO and that was a major project before the city council when I was in college.

Is Stefanie still the district manager up there? She used to be the store manager at the coffee place we regularly frequented. All my son wants in the world is to be a partner, but being under 18, despite his volunteer hours nearly everywhere and his thorough knowledge of the product, he's been turned down regularly. When he gets settled in college in Thousand Oaks this fall, he's going to try again (he'll finally be 18).

Hi Stacey!

Your children spread more than mine do (17 and 7). I just got back last month from a visit to your beautiful area. My son was considering Emory, and it was an incredible campus. In the end, it was just too far from home and he's settled on a small private school about 45 minutes from home.

I loved your post on the peanut allergies. I don't think people fully understand the ramifications of the airborne allergy, and you posted so incredibly succinctly, I hope it opens a few eyes.

Welcome to the community!

Re: Let's Introduce Ourselves
Thank you, MagnetMom! Glad to make your acquaintance!

Emory is a great school and has a beautiful campus. My daughter wanted to attend but I simply couldn't swing it, but she's at Georgia State now and she's pleased with it.

Congratulations to your son on his achievement, getting into Emory is no small feat! My oldest daughter used to live in Oxnard, CA when she was in the Navy. I loved California, it's absolutely breathtaking, but I did miss the lushness of the South and I'm a bit terrified of earthquakes, but I was ready to sell everything and move out there!

Should you ever pass through Atlanta again, let me know, I'll give you the grand tour!

Re: Let's Introduce Ourselves
Ok, me next. My name is Melanie and I have lived in Memphis, Tn. all my life. I raised 2 sons as a working mother and from their being 6 weeks old, they went to a daycare, then to pre-K, then to private school. I did not have a mother or mother-in-law to help keep my kids, so the daycare system was my only choice. They survived it, I reported anything that didn't go right at the daycare or preschool and kept a watchful eye on my boys grades and attendance at school. Now I am the proud grandmother of 4 beautiful children my oldest son has, Skye is 9, Aidan is 6, Dylan is 5 and Ella is 3. Since I am retired I get to enjoy them whenever they come over and I always plan a special something for that day. My oldest granddaughter, Skye, is very attached to me as I am to her as I raised her for the first 4 years of her life as her Mom & Dad had night time jobs. She is special, brilliant and loves to act, dance and sing. I have been able to go to the school that Skye went to for 3 years and volunteer in the school library which opened up a whole new world of helping and entertaining children. I would sometimes fill in for the teachers for an hour or so and read a story or do a science experiment, teach them the many varieties of apples with samples of all for them to taste, and I even bought caterpillars to the classroom in a netted hanging display and the children got to watch day after day the progression of the caterpillar as he climbed to the top of the cage, hung upside down and formed a chrysallis and some they watched a Monarch Butterfly come alive before their eyes and they were so amazed. Simultaneously, I had a Luna Moth in another netted cage also transforming and it emerged a large 6 inch long lime green moth. They never had so much fun watching this and as I had told them when I brought them into the classroom for their learning project, they must release the butterfly and moth after keeping them for just a day or two. I had instructed them on how to feed them in captivity, but that they should only keep them for 1 or 2 days. I received some amazing photographs from the teacher the day the kids set the Monarch and Luna loose into the world. Each child had the biggest smile on their tiny faces as they said Goodbye to the class mascots they had 'helped to become what they were meant to be'. Now Aidan is in kindergarten and I can't wait to be able to help the teacher out whenever she needs me. This enjoyment I get is the greatest treasure I'll ever know which is why I encourage any grandmother or grandfather that does not have to work, to please volunteer in your grandchildren's school and lend a creative and fun and exciting hand to the children. They will think you are all the more special as I can remember hearing Skye whispering to her classmates as I dressed up and played Mrs. Santa Claus for 3 years, "That's MY Grandmother!!!!!"
I live for my grandchildren and my life revolves totally around them. Hey, Chuck E. Cheese can't compare to Melly's house, they choose it everytime.

Hi - I'm Tamara
I'm a mother of four sons -- two still at home. My eldest owns his own business (24 years-old), and my second son (22 years-old) is going to school to be a pilot. No - I still haven't flown with him and yes, I'm scared. ;)

My 14 year-old is just heading into high school and my 12 year-old is moving up to middle school. I've chosen to send my 14 year-old to a different school district via school choice this year so he can attend a school with better mathematics scores (he wants to be a scientist/engineer of some sort) and with a better teacher-student ratio. I'm anxiously awaiting the beginning of the new school year to see how he does in his new environment!

I live in Western Massachusetts - away from my Southern family members - which makes life difficult for me as a single mother, but I do love my independence and being active in my sons' lives.

I'm a new member to this site and looking forward to interacting with you all!

Re: Let's Introduce Ourselves
Hi tnlsmom03!

You made very interesting statements. I believe you made a fair decision on your children attending public schools. The reason why is because this is a snapshot of dealing with the "Real World". Both children will be able to improve their social skills, as well as, experience their tolerance for rejection. They will have a better grasp of their self-concept by interactions with others.

YOur son is in his puberty stage. The friends he'll meet will dictate the behavior you'll need to manage. It would be a great idea to invite them over for a pizza, birthday, or back-to-school party! You and your husband will have the opportunity to indirectly interview these "Friends". Then, you will call and set up a time whereas you are able to meet with a couple of their parents during your lunch break or on a Saturday evening cook-out.

Your daughter will be happy to have some of her New classmates to come to her house for a sleepover or enroll her with the Girl Scouts, as a Daisy. First Introductions are long lasting.

The qualities and skills you have acquired should be shared with other parents, therefore, you are able to build a partnership, which may later lead to a "Friendship".

God has already worked it out. You and your husband must TRUST and OBEY what God is instructed you to do. According to your faith, your family is truly blessed.

A lot of times, as people, we usually try to analyze a situation. When it doesn't meet the normal ways, we become discouraged, frustrated, depressed, and stressed out. When we let go of our own way of thinking, and let God have HIS way with the matter, we are at peace when all kaos is breaking loose around us.

Don't wait until things get hectic before you go to the Lord in prayer. Thank God for what He is already doing in your lives. When you don't have the answer, begin to praise and thank God just for who He is to you and for all that He has done for you and your family. God will be pleased with your worship to Him and you will receive the overflow of blessings in many ways you never thought possible. But keep something in mind, with God ALL things are Possible for YOU and your household.

Divinely inspired,
Caring mom

Hopefully, we will be able to speak with one another more often.

Hi Smltwngrl423!

I read your introduction and it sounds as though you are lonely. Although your child is present with you during the day, you have a void in your life. There's something that you've experienced that has left you empty inside.

I understand you have a fiance, but he can't fulfill your emptiness. I'll pray that God will give you strength to address the past issue that you have not closed in your life, in order for you to move forward with your new beginning.

Divinely inspired,

Re: Let's Introduce Ourselves
Hi Auzalia,
I am not really sure what statements I made that were very interesting, but ok.
My husband and I have been through the puberty stage and many trials already with my son, and are finally starting to see the blessings of our decisions and actions. We have seen a miracle performed in my son through answered prayers. God has totally blessed us!
We are very involved parents and know exactly who our kids are with and what they are doing.
Both of our kids, especially my son, are involved in many social activities. Even being homeschooled, he wasn't locked in the house with me 24/7 Hahaha!
God has blessed us for many years by allowing me to stay at home and make sure that my kids received a solid foundation to build on.
God has entrusted the care of His children to me and I pray every day that I make decisions for them that glorify God's plan for their lives.

Hi I am a mother of two who works part time at a business my mother owns. My son just turned 4 last month and my daughter turns 1 in a couple of weeks. My son starts preschool in three days and is very excited, I however am not as excited...he grew up too fast. Anyways I have lived in Conneticut my whole life and I have two sisters, one brother, and awesome mother and as far as I am concerned NO father.

I have joined the community in hopes of making friends with other parents. It is hard for some of my friends to take my life because my family comes first and a lot of them do not have families of their own yet. So because of this I haven't many friends anymore. Since I do work and the rest of the time I am spending with my family and husband the little time I do have is spent here on my computer looking for people to talk to, ideas for things to do with my children and advice from others going through what I am going through at any given time. I hope to find what I am looking for here. Thanx!

Re: Let's Introduce Ourselves
Hello Everyone,

I am new to the site and have enjoyed it thus far. I have been married for 16 years now and we have 7 children aged 3, 5, 7, 9, 10, 12, and 14. All girls are in the middle. I am a housewife now after having our 4th child. We made the decision after noticing my husband and my lack of time truly spent with our children do to strenuous work hours. I didn't' want them to be raised by institutions. We were barely seeing them for 2 hours which included eating dinner. It was our choice and GOD made it possible for us to make it on one income. Yes, we definitely have had our share in rough times. We have lived on both sides of the financial table; having and living comfortably to struggling month-to-month. I battle everyday with the desire to go back to work and the guilty feeling of not staying home especially with the last two. I'm happy to know I am here for all of our children, but also miss intermingling with people around my own age. My life is literally surrounded around our family. I give my 110% to being a housewife and mother as I would with any other job. It leaves you drained and suffering with insomnia most of the time, but what job normally doesn't if you give every inch of your person. My husband and I were both born and raised in Chicago, IL and come from large families as well. Our high school teachers always shared their intake on how our friendship would end in marriage (I always denied it trying to be stubborn). He eventually found the key to my inner heart and kept it ever since.

I desire to get to know and surround myself around new personalities and break the norm of everyday activities. Be able to vent, learn from others, share my knowledge, and keep that balance of sanity to make it through future life experiences.

I have had some difficulty with my dashboard and can't retrieve my personal messages. Does anyone know how to fix this? This is for laura1967, maybe we need to resubmit the "acceptance as a friend" I would like to hear from you again. I see the alert messages on my hot-mail address showing messages from you but it is not coming through on my snapshot under private messages.

I hope to meet more of you too. Thanks for inviting me.

Re: Let's Introduce Ourselves
You're both sweet, Mckandzee51607 and Hopkinsatl! Thanks for the compliment. Even though I have 7 munchkins, I can relate to anyone who may have one, two, five, etc. We are all mothers who have been given the opportunity to raise little ones. (It's funny how our children can look like miniature images of us when we look into their eyes or at old pictures, huh? I think that's God's way of motivating/encouraging us to nurture them to the fullest. How can you not want to care for someone that looks up at you and all you see is your husband's/mate's or your face looking back at you with those puppy-looking eyes?)

All we can do is hope they reap all the benefits we are able to offer to prepare them for this "world" we all call home for a time. I say let us all pat ourselves on the back after every night we complete as a parent in their lives. So, please don't short-change yourself. There are not enough words to describe the duties parents have to perform, and it doesn't matter how many children you may have. It is definitely strenuous being an at-home mother/father or a parent who works outside the home and then have to perform those duties at home after carrying the troubles of everyday life decisions in the workforce.

Re: Let's Introduce Ourselves
Hello everyone,

I am soo glad to have happened upon this community. I have been receiving news letters from Great Schools for over a year now but had no clue that this community existed until yesterday. I am sooo glad to be a member.

A little bit about me. I am recently married (second time around) and have inherited a daughter age 15, And I have a wonderful son of my own age 13 (this month).

Being remarried with children is currently a challenge in our family. My husband and I have totally different parenting styles, ways to discipline, rules and expectations. I just hope that these challenges do not cause another divorce.

I love being a mom to my son (and would love being a mom to my daughter if I was allowed to). Although I do not believe in parents being their childrens friend I would say that my son and I have a decent relationship; which use to be great until he became a tween lets hope the teen years will move it back to great. We spend a lot of time talking about what's going on in his life and the lives of people around him. We talk about his goals, wants and desires. I find it my personal duty to help him make some of those things come true.

I recently stop working full time and now consider myself a full time student but have picked up a part-time job as a Parent involvement Coordiator.

I do not take my responsiblities as a parent lightly. It is my job to prepare my child for the best possible future. If I do not give him everything I have to give in order to help him and he fails it is my fault. But if I give him all the proper tools he need and he fails then it is his fault.

I love parenting and enjoy talking to others about parenting, children, education and any other topic closely related. I also enjoy talking about the Lord. God is my best friend and I love him so much so to be able to talk about the Lord and being a parent and how they go together is an added bonus.

I look forward to share with others what I have found to work for me as well as hearing what has worked for all of you.

Again I look forward to talking with many of you and building on line friendships with people that I'd normally never connect with. Please feel free to add me as a friend. I look forward to interacting with each of you.

Welcome to the Community, CLWinfrey! Thanks for taking the time to share with us. Becoming a stepmother to a teenage girl is not an easy job. But give your family time to adjust to these new and huge changes and make sure you and your husband get on the same page!

If you have any questions about the Parent Community, feel free to send me a message anytime. There are also quite a few "regulars" who you'll get to know quickly who would be happy to answer questions too. Talk to you soon!

I had not realize so many days have past 28 since joining group discussions but a couple years of looking in on schools which has been very good insight.
My children are 39 ,38, 27 and 20 middle two are young ladies. Grandchildren in 9th, 5th & 3rd grade. My youngest son is a College Sophomore.
I have to many Life experience's more bad then good.
and My Wife has double that. My children are spread out and one really not reachable I have to put trust into her boyfriends hands that is difficult as it is different
She is living in Hong Kong, China
I believe knowledge is something no one can take away from you. Stress education. Understanding your fears and learning how to deal with that. Treating people with dignity and respect. Making sure myself is in a good place otherwise how can I help anyone else.
and my favorite phrase is "life is difficult and once you realize that you will make it"
I have enjoyed everything each person brings to a discussion. All of us can learn even if we do not agree at least we have thought of someones different ideas.

Hi Parentof7, I got a big back pain when I saw you have 7 children. lol Boy, what a trooper you must be. I only had 2 boys to raise and worked and I just barely got things done. I wouldn't know how to begin to care for 7, guess it would come naturally. I'm a grandmother now and am the leader of the group "Grandmas Unite" hoping to talk with other grandmothers about volunteering at their grandchildrens' schools. Now that I have all this time on my hands, unlike when I raised my sons, I love to volunteer and help out. If you join my group you'll see my last year's letter and my just recent letter and how different they are. I am struggling with a step-mom, new wife to my son who does not want me to be involved in the school and volunteer. It's just been a 360 from what I was enjoying doing at their schools. But I'm glad to know you and welcome you to the community. I'm in Memphis, Tn. Welcome, Helpful Grandma

Hi my name is Dawn Vacek I live with my husband and 3 yr old son.
We are a multi-cultural family, My husband and I are white and we adopted an African American child. He is 3 1/2 yrs old. We are looking for a multicultural school that has an excellent academic program structured school day and a wide variety of extra curricular activities. We are not asking for much just the perfect school for him. I am having a hard time finding a school that meets all my requirements.
Right now he attends Bobbie Noonan's Pre-school. Which I am very happy with and so is he. I also have him enrolled in soccer. He loves it. It meets once a week and he wakes up every morning saying I half to go to soccer today! After Christmas he will start gymnastics in addition to soccer.

I am quite new and still learning and finding my way around the site. Some of these members have genuine hearts to help others or just sharing their own experiences that may be similar to our own is worth even more in my opinion. We live in Southern Massachusetts. I have three children, a 27 year daughter with 2 children of her own now, a 17 year old son and a 12 year old. Yes, quite an age difference between them. They share a special closeness regardless of their age. We able to enjoy each one that way! They are unique from one another and each have had their own struggles, as we all do. We are proud of all of them. I am sure we go through many things most families do. I stumbled across this group by accident but I think it is awesome. Hello to all of you! ;)

Re: Let's Introduce Ourselves
Hi! I'm in Phlly. Married, 45, disabled & one 5 1/2 yr. son, TJ. I've been a school volunteer almost 3yrs. Mainly, since TJ has a speech problem. Kids are so cruel even at 3yrs old. I always try to flip-flop the situation. If you couldn't speak properly, would you want people to laugh at you? Of course, they always say no. I talk to TJ about this all the time. TJ knows how to defend himself quite well now. If you don't understand him, he will give you three chances. Then he will say something like you may not understand me, it is OK. I go to Speech Therapy & will explain if need to be. His self-esteem is back up. He is no longer embarrassed by this. I tell him everyone can't do everything at the same time. He is very intelligent for his age. He loves science & math. Says that he wants to be a principal & a firefighter. I volunteer in his class almost everday. TJ doesn't need my help in class anymore, it's the other students. I just have to keep my promise to TJ. Not to let the other students steal alllll of my hugs. They all love to hug me every morning. I've noticed the ones that have been getting more attention are doing better. I tell them all to put on their thinking caps every morning. You should see them in motion trying to put it on. LOL

Re: Let's Introduce Ourselves
I'm a SAHM with five funny, interesting, amazing kids (of course I'm biased), four of them in school this year, which has turned out to be very crazy trying to keep them all on top of homework, reading minutes, typing, projects, school programs, etc., etc. I have a 6th, 5th, 3rd, kinder, and 3 yo. Keeps me busy, but I love being a mom. I love hearing about all of their feelings, friends, what they're excited about, what they're worried about. That's my favorite part about parenting.

I joined because I've decided going into the teenage years, that I'm not fully equipped to handle this and would love support and help from other parents who've been through what I'm going through. I'm also passionate about education and want to help my kids get the most out of theirs.

Greatschools actually helped us choose the school district when we moved back to our home state - we'd chosen a completely different area of the state and when we looked at the schools there, they were mediocre. We happily found that the school district by our extended family was one of the best in the state and built a house within the boundaries of one of the best high schools in the nation for our kids to grow up and attend. So far we haven't been disappointed.

My son is in a smaller class size I redirect him with verbal prompts when he gets off task. I have taught him how to write things down when he has to do things to keep track of what he needs to do.He just had an IHP and his math teacher said he is really doing well and suggested to put my son in regular classes for Algebra 1 with an in class support teacher. There are just daily things I do with my son to keep him on task that is like second nature for he and I .My son wasn't evaluated until he was in 6th grade at 1st I was in denial thinking not my son syndrome.Until I had to come to grips that there is something definitely not right as he got older and his forgetfulness got worse.

I am hoping to learn some new ways to help him and reduce the stress on the family. It would be nice to be able to talk to people who know what we are going through, maybe someone who has been there and can give some good advice. ADD/ADHD Coping Strategies
Sounds like my son. He's in 6th grade and I'm always hounding him about homework and keeping him on task. I bought him a little weekly planner that I help him update everyday to see at a glance what's due, what needs to get done, and he can cross off what he's accomplished. We also found he is very sensitive to chocolate, and to a lesser extent, sugar, so we've eliminated the one, and try to limit the other and only after homework or on weekends so it doesn't interfere with school. Protein in the morning helps, and I've had doctors and alternative providers both suggest fish oil for the Omega 3 to help with focus. I take 4 g daily myself, and also find that green tea capsules help just as well as Adderall did, without the side effects and the racing heart. I haven't given any medication or caffeine to my son, but try and teach him coping skills - breaking things into bite size pieces or taking things in steps. Those things help a lot.

I'm not averse to medication, it really helped me, and I'd still take it if it didn't have some adverse effects for some other health concerns, but for some reason I hesitate giving it to my kids.

Hi Mamax5:

Welcome to Greatschools!

I see you’ve posted a response here regarding ADD/ADHD. I’d like to invite you to join our Learning and Attention Difficulties group: community.greatschools.net/groups/11554. You’ll find a lot of helpful information on ADD/ADHD here, as well as many other parents going through similar situations with their children. Greatschools has quite a few members who have children with ADD/ADHD.

We also have a group regarding education laws and regulations, which provides very useful information and tips for parents dealing with IEP’s, 504’s and other related topics. community.greatschools.net/groups/77570.

Re: Let's Introduce Ourselves
Hello to Fellow Parents,

My name is Debbie and I am from Texas.
My husband and I are the proud parents to Dylan, Amber, and Keira.
Dylan is in 1st Grade this year and Amber is in AM Pre-K this year.
Keira, is 2 and a half and has a late BDay (Sept 29th), so she wont be able to start school for a while.

Our family has been through a lot in the past year and it has impacted all of us, Dylan, especially.
They are in public school, and after Hurricane Ike we lost our home and had to move maybe 5 mins down the road, but to a new school.
This school is like dark, compared to the light of the school Dylan went to last year for Kindergarten, and had attended this year for 1st Grade from Aug to Mid October of 2008.

I am so frustrated and heart broken that my kids are going through this, and to hear my son say, Mommy I am not happy, I want to go back to "School Name."
My son has been the victim of Female students acting out their home abuse atmosphere with their openly sexual conduct toward other boys in their class/grade.
This is very upsetting to me, and I am not happy with the way the school is handling it, even when the counselor knows the girls home situation, and knows our home atmosphere is totally different.
Boys should not always be labeled as the one doing bad things; at least in this case my son did not do anything wrong, and now is so confused.

I work Full time as a Drafter, so am out of the home M-F, but I am on the PTO Executive bored and a Homeroom Parent.
This schools PTO is so different from what I am used to at the school from last year, and it is so discouraging, but I have to keep on because the PTO is there to benefit the children.
However, we have to be able to do things and not have the school staff getting in the way.

I am looking very hard into Private/Charter Schools, but my husband is recovering from brain surgery last year, and is a student, so is a Stay at Home Dad, so with one income, Private Schools have always been out of the question.

Hope to be able to chat with others soon.

Re: Let's Introduce Ourselves
Hello, I am a mother of two girls. My oldest is seven and youngest six. We love to bake, do art projects, shop together. My girls love to read, write, do math problems, play outside and play school.
We moved back to our home town seven months ago and are still trying to adjust to the school system. We move from Nashville, where we loved the school our school. Now we are trying to figure out the "flow" of this school.

I am mostly concerned with the redistricting that took place before we moved back, the programs that are not offered to all of the school in our county.

MY husband and I both work, still have plenty of time for school activities. We try our best to help our children to stay interested in the school work that they have as well as keeping their minds active during the summer.

Well, about me, my husband and I were married last year. We have been together for five and a half years. We stress learning and fun daily. We both are creative people and try to help the girls to learn through fun.

I think I have rambled in a bit. Well, hello community!

Welcome leftcoastmom,
I noticed you joined a home schooling group. Do you home school? My sister home schooled her two kids. This is something I have thought about from time to time.

Anyway after reading your profile I would like to suggest some other Great School groups.

Re: Let's Introduce Ourselves
Hello I am going to be a first time mom come January 2010 and I was looking a for a great Daycare. My husband works in Pine Bluff and I in Little Rock but we live in Redfield we thought it would be a better decision to have baby here in Little Rock with me. We are looking for a Center that interacts and teaches as well as care for our little one. All suggestions are welcomed.

Thanks

Re: Let's Introduce Ourselves
MsPolk, Congratulations!!!!! Also Welcome to "Great Schools". I do not have a specific answer to your question since I am from Chicago Il. Also it would help to know the state you live in. So if anyone is from your area they may post an answer to your question.

On the green tool bar at the top of this page is "Find a School" you could re-post your question there.

I have a degree in early childhood development so I could share with you what things you may want to look for in someone who is caring for an infant.

In My Humble Opinion (IMHO) The biggest cognitive / emotional challenge an infant has is developing a sense of trust in the world. In order for an infant to develop a sense that most people are trustworthy, they need to have a primary caregiver who meets their needs. Picks them up when they cry. Feeds them when they are hungry. Changes them when they are wet or dirty. Also playfully interacts with them many times throughout the day. Gives them the amount of rest and down time they need.

IMHO it is important that the primary caregiver be the same person for at least the first year of life. Actually I think the first 3yrs. would be ideal.

For an infant you need the ratio to be 2 or 3 to 1. 1 on 1 is ideal.

IMHO It would be difficult for any day care center to provide what an infant needs. However maybe there are some out there.

If you are unable to stay home with your baby for the first year of his life. The next best thing to do is get a sitter that comes to your house to take care of your little one. Or send your little one to a small home day care.

Well I am not sure if this was the type of advice you were looking for.... However you said, "All suggestions are welcomed." So this is my humble opinion.

Good Luck to you and your family.

Hello, I'm ad7706 and I'm an addict....of GS that is!!! haha

I have a 12 y/o boy entering the 7th grade fall 2009. We are currently in Madison, WI [with plans to return to DC]. I'm an attorney, my husband is an IT specialist, so we work.....A LOT!! however we make time for family. My child is in public school [wouldn't change it for the world!!] and is very active in Church, soccer, baseball, sailing, flying, skiing, equestrian activities, taekwondo, Project Lead the Way, MathCounts, First Lego League, Kappa League, NSBE, Jr., and a host of other activities. I am completely addicted to GS, and have found all the advice and information from every to be absolutely invaluable! Thank you all!

p.s.
I also plan to enroll my child in Swanson middle school in Arlington, VA [next school year] which is our intended return to the DC area. So if anyone has anything, good, bad or ugly, to add about this school please share. My family plans our residence around schools we'd like our child to attend. [I'd also like my child to attend TJ high school].

I'm Giovanna, and although I'm not new to GreatSchools, I'll still introduce myself.

I'm a 35 year old married mother of two, a daughter (11) and a son (4). I have Multiple Sclerosis. I'm a Reiki Master and will be a Certified Life-Dream Coach at the beginning of February. I'm committed to overcoming my disability and getting back to work in this new field.

I live in Arizona and my family is planning a move to California in the near future.

I am a homeschool mom; however my kids both go to school now. I merely augment their school education with further education from home. My son is in Pre-K in a private school and my daughter is in 6th in a fantastic public school.
