It's been mentioned before, but people are obviously still confused by this site's registration process and the way that they might be directed to the forum after looking up a specific school.

While some of us "experienced" members know there is now a way to categorize questions "locally," most people do not.  It would seem like this exchange is a typical example: community.greatschools.net/q-and-a/278603/I-am-looking-to-find-out-when-the-end-of-the-current-quarter-is?cpage=1&cpn=Com_ImmediateNote#comment_278671

Is Greatschools doing anything to help streamline/clarify this site?

Laura1967: Thanks for taking the time to point people in the right direction! Make sure when you're answering these questions, though, that they are not marked as "Local."

The best way to check this is to look at the top of the page, right under the big blue bar, where it says, "You are here..." If it shows a city/state there, then that means the question has been categorized as local.

If a question is categorized locally, then we don't need to inform them that we are a national site because their question will get filtered to people in their area. Does this make sense?

If you can, try to direct people to another area of the website that could help them find the information they need or connect with parents in similar situations.

For example, are they asking a question about kindergarten? Direct them to the group for kindergarten parents or to some of the articles in the GreatSchools Library.

Re: Greatschools needs to clarify their site,so people know the forum is nationwide
With local Q&A, we've added a local layer to the forum so that parents can ask questions specific to a city or school and get those questions answered by members who are familiar with the area. Since so many parents use our site to choose a school or research schools, it's important to us to support local conversations here.

Because we want to move away from being a nationwide-only forum and into a place where we support conversations about cities, schools AND nationwide topics, we won't be doing anything to stop questions about specific cities or schools from being posted.

That doesn't mean we can't improve what we're currently doing to capture and organize local discussions. In fact, that's a focus for us right now: getting local right! So far, so good, though: We've seen that many members do know how to categorize their local questions, so we're on the right track.
